Drone War: Capture & Destroy

Description
My entry for the Nvidia Scenario contest.

FINAL version here: http://steamproxy.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=360552743

Disclaimer: The level is more or less complete, but all the dials arent tuned yet. I wont update this workshop entry until I get the OK from KeenSWH, I dont want to disqualify myself from the contest yet. I may upload another level as I get it closer to complete.

Mission story:
You and your team have been trapped inside a base on an unknown moon. The base teases freedom, but locks the doors as soon as anyone attempts to leave.

Your captors have given a directive: destroy the enemy base, leaving any survivors to be ripped apart by the fearsome defenses on the moon's surface.

Gameplay:
The teams must venture out of their respective bases through the eyes, weapons and claws of the provided drones. Venturing outside of the canyons and craters on the moon will cause the aggressive turrets nearby to rip the drone to shreds.

The players start the level with a few simple (gripper) drones, and have enough resources to build a single fighter drone, as well as a few of the smaller drones. In order to gain more resources they must destroy and harvest wrecked drones, or use the two resource bases and central drill

Reaching the scarce resources requires moving along the existing canyons to capture local turrets. Once captured, the turret structures will expand your antenna range, allowing drone access to other turrets and resources.

The first missile turret outside the base crater cannot be lost, only destroyed by the opposing team. This tower has no affect on the antenna network.

Taking a left at the first turret will lead to a switchable turret. In the same crater is an underground path to the central drill arena. Once this turret is captured, your team will be able to reach the far side of the drill arena

After the switchable turret is another one mounted on the wall. The local crater has a supply depot where players can grab crates full of components required
The 2nd switchable turret gives players enough antenna range to reach the turret closest to the enemy. Once that is captured the team can fully reach the opposing team's base.

Drones:
Each base will have a full allotment of nonconstructed drones in bins. THe players must pull the drones out by using the gripper drones initially and feed them into a welder oven. Once built they can afford to send some cheaper ships to retrieve more components and build larger war machines.

Features:

-Symmetrical canyon paths with bases and permanent defense turrets on each side.

-Team Switchable turrets in key sections of the map. Switching a turret to your side will extend your team's antenna network and drone range.

-Aggressive AI turrets along the surface of the world will fire on any drones that leave the canyons.

-Resource bases (soon to be) filled with components necessary to build larger and more advanced drones.

-Neutral Drill Crane in the central arena that mines and refines minerals required for ammo, missiles and warheads.

-11 types of drone, deploy-able device, and utility attachments available in each garage.

-All large turrets in the world are self repairing. Without sustained fire they will quickly return to full strength.

Drones:

-Gripper: Small utility drone for moving incomplete drones into the welder oven, grinding destroyed drones into parts, and retrieving resources from supply depots.

-Workship: Larger utility drone with Welding, Grinding, and Drilling attachments. Much larger than the gripper, with cargo space and more control for bigger jobs. Workship has an extendable periscope that allows a better view of the work at hand.

-Fighter: Sleek, fast, and armed to the teeth. Has dual gatlings with an ammo-saving timer, as well as a 4 shot rocket launcher. Flak ejectors can spray mass amounts of junk to confuse turrets and block missiles from the enemy.

-Spy: A tiny drone with cloaking disguises that can obscure it from turret fire. The front camera can look through solid objects to gain intel for the team. Has an explosives ejector and warheads that can destroy turrets once close enough

-Cargo truck: A hover vehicle with cargo space and a collector. Completely defenseless but it's the only drone that can retrieve explosive/bullet components from the central drill crane.

-Tank: Heavily armed and armored war machine. Turret is a separate drone that can be piloted by another player, or connected for the driver to fire all weapons. The body has two gatlings and two automated defense turrets. The main turret has three gatlings and a reloadable rocket launcher. Main turret can be connected to the body temporarily to reload the rocket launcher from its internal ammo stores.

Deployables:

-Auto Sentry Turret: An armored interior turret that can be dragged into position by utility ships. Once anchored to a solid surface, the turret will engage and defend the area from attackers and rockets. No antenna or remote block, so it cant be controlled directly and wont give away its position when hidden around the corner.

-Antenna repeater: A tiny device with 500m of antenna range that can be used to push into areas that the team cant otherwise reach. Has a simple remote camera gimbal to look for enemy movement.

To Do:
-Turret ownership still needs to be tuned

-Supply depots are currently empty

-Drone garages need to be populated with incomplete drones

-Drill crane area needs Magnesium/Iron/etc deposits to suit its intended purpose

-Drones currently have far too much flak/explosive components. When the tank or spy dies it causes extreme lag.

-General lighting/beautification of the level. Enemy and friendly structures are very difficult to see in shadow through the drone camera's overlay.

When will the final be released?
Baalrog  [author] 10 Dec, 2014 @ 12:28pm
Understood, Prof.Dee. I will be updating a "final" version overtop this one soon. I'm working the kinks out and gameplay should match the description when it's done.

I've uploaded a 2hr timelapse video of the crane mining ore in the center of the final level. When you start, the crane will have a ton of materials in it already, and will be deep into the ore deposits. The crane is functional decoration.

The level isnt fully complete, I ran out of time. I'm currently working on a "final" version, what I wanted the game to be as my submission. I'll link to that one from here, as well as the forum and anywhere else its posted.

Well played, this is very nice. I will gather up a group of friends sometime and play this.
