The original game was already one of my favorite games. But Silksong has easily shown that Team Cherry learned from the first game in making this one even better. While the game is not perfect, featuring some instances where the game can be a bit unfun. One of the worst was the boss in Bilehaven. Even with the secret closer bench, that run back to the boss was still unpleasant. There are also a number of more enemies that just do two masks of damage, making it feel like sometimes the trash are harder fights than some bosses!

But all in all, the increased ways of movement with the different crests paired with the new charms and tools, makes the game feel extremely customizable to your playstyle. Though I do feel some crests could use some explanation as their effects aren't always so clear, looking at you Witch Crest. I still got more I need to do, a lot more. But between Silksong, Hades 2, and a number of other games I have a lot to still finish!

Edit 12/3/24: I've now packed on a lot more hours. The main story seems to be better than the introduction as I speculated it would. It's still by no means a masterpiece but a rather enjoyable experience. There's some added mechanics for companion dialog alerts so that you don't miss opportunities to talk to them while not wasting time running to them for every little trip back to make sure they don't have something new to say. The companions all feel pretty realistic and great, though there are a few rougher spots and points that could have used a little more polish to not feel so forced.

However, I've been greatly enjoying the game and the story within it. While I have found some things I'm not too happy with in the artistic direction (looking at you Darkspawn). I also do dislike that Bioware loves to make the binary "Save X or Y" moment that does seem to have lasting effects on gameplay. But it's not the worst thing to deal with. But most of those things are minor to me. Though I do think they need to go back to the drawing board on the Darkspawn designs to be less cartoonish!

Old Review:

Don't have a lot of time on it yet, but from the intro combat and choices. The game has been fun. The character creator lacks a little in body diversity and choices, but this kind of feels more like a stylistic choice. I do wish it allowed more range though. But the physics on the hair allow for a lot of diversity in that route rather than plastic hair that never moves. The full length hairs are awesome for that reason. As for the gameplay, I quite like it so far. It feels smooth and skill-based. Timing matters for dodges and blocks. Target lines make it easier to see where ranged enemies are attacking, but I can see that being a little unimmersive for some.

As for writing, the game feels of the same caliber as I'd say of Inquisition so far. The story is a little rough. I've not gotten into the bread and butter of the NPCs interactions and dialog much yet, but there is a bit of clumsiness there. But I've only seen two of them so far, and we'll see how well that holds up in continued play!

We fight for the right side now! Liberty! Democracy! And defeating those Robotic Corporate suits who try to limit our fellow helldivers from joining the fight! Good job everyone!

Edit 11/27/21: The game has gotten tons of updates and changes. The gun balancing has been mixed at times, but ultimately a lot of weapons have been made good and have builds for them. While I might not like some, they are really good when you play them right. The devs also do listen to feedback pretty well, such as when the Bunny character released and well... she looked like a bunny girl with a human face slapped on. Fans didn't like it and complained, so they changed it. Still does a little, but at least better than before.

Melee builds are a little crippled at times due to some things just out of range. The turtle's punch, for example, cannot reach most of the cannons on the ship boss. Though other melee weapons can. The new UFO enemy flies and is often out of range even when jumping to hit it, so try to always carry at least one ranged weapon besides the starting pistol.

Ultimately, a great game, especially when you play with friends and share what you find and just have fun. Still a highly recommended game from me.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gunfire Reborn is a game that does what it says it will do. At this point in development, it's doing really well and receives content updates rather frequently. You can definitely see some translation fails ("I find chest." instead of "I found a chest."), but ultimately the game is still fun and enjoyable.

The major complaint I would have is that there are some weapons that just are bad. They aren't necessarily bad "Except in this specific build" but even when they do have a specific build to make it work... it's not nearly as good as others. This includes weapons like the Illusion, Rainbow, and flamethrower lizard. The lattermost couldn't even hit the final boss for quite some time (it may still not be able to, I haven't tested). Meanwhile, the Pupil, Wild Hunt, and Argus all function as a better shotgun than the Illusion. The Rainbow has the advantage of shooting around corners, but it's slow and you'll easily get overwhelmed by enemies fast. Especially when weapons like the Prism manage blind corners just as well but also handles nearly every other situation much better (with rainbow's advantage just being faster ticks which might matter for some scrolls).

This is bad especially since people then feel forced to go only specific builds and will skip over most of these items rather than try out their playstyle. Because unless they hyper focus a very specific playstyle with them and get lucky with Scrolls, Enchantments, and Goblets... it's not worth it. Where other weapons can still be good without relying too much on luck of the draw.

Ultimately, it's still a really fun game, but some balance tweaks to certain weapons can really help them as well as build up a more diverse play style. I do hope we'll see more heroes as time comes, as well as talents and the like, as well as extensions to the number of chapters in a run.

PS: Also please make it so that the death crawl movement isn't so awkward if the camera isn't facing the exact way you are facing when crawling!

Edit: 7/2/20: At this point, I cannot support the Devs any longer. The updates are too slow and the fixes not enough and mixed in with bad balancing that kills builds rather than promotes builds. And while the game has a lot of good in it with some really fun gameplay, it has taken them too long to fix it, killing much of the community and support. It's a shame, Wolcen had so much potential only to be wasted. I do wish I could come back to give the game a more positive outlook, but ultimately even I stopped playing.

At this point, I've now beaten the main part of the game and gotten into doing the endgame content. My main online character is around level 47 so I'm still nowhere near fully completed on content. But I do want to say my opinion on the game and why I've still chosen to give this a thumbs up. So to start, let's break it down:

The Good:
- The freedom of builds is a ton of fun. Mixing and matching different abilities allows for a lot of playstyles. I've played around with a "Priest" with a focus on Aether and Sacred (using Solarfall, Bulwark, Sacred Jump ability [forget the name], Infinity Blades, and Anomaly) while my friend is running Elemental Projectile build with Pistol/Catalyst. A lot of freedom to just kind of do a lot.
- Rage/Willpower Mechanic. I honestly find this far more enjoyable than the mana systems in other ARPGs. That said, I do think the WP/R potions could be a bit bigger... having to pop 2 uses to even be useful is meh.
- The Story. It's kind of your typical "edgy to be edgy" story with a feeling that bears similarity to Diablo, W40k, and other "dark" stories. I found the background characters quite interesting, especially the "stop and listen" dialog. Especially when everyone's favorite guard came up through the mist!
- The Graphics. It's hard to say no to these wonderful graphics. There are a few issues (like sometimes a tree doesn't fully load). But it's an absolutely stunning game to look at.
- Gameplay. The way the game plays and feels just feels really good to me. The not being able to drink a potion thing can suck, but very rare for it to come up (though when it does, I die). Early on the enemies are a bit weak, but champions and special packs still are a bit of a challenge. Though the boss fights, though not necessarily the mini-bosses (though those can be), are a lot harder. It can make the rest of the game feel a bit boring in comparison.

The Bad:
- Bugs. There's a lot, even if I didn't encounter a lot myself (at least in comparison to others). But to list of some major ones I've encountered: Couldn't open my inventory in town, Mobs spawning off the map (especially when you need them to clear a zone), moonwalking characters (harmless but funny), unhittable mobs and destructibles (frustrating beyond belief) without AoE, Vendor NPC spawning in an area of the map not accessible (aggravating), ACT1 Boss spawning off the map and then purposefully leaping off the map (not supposed to be able to do that though) after him (and falling into town).
- Talent Tree. I love it, if it worked. A lot of abilities are still broken in it and need to be fixed. Secondly, a lot of the "major" talents you can unlock feel lackluster or punishing to yourself. An ability that delays 60% of the damage you received for 1 second can maybe save your life, but it is a second extra of reaction time only.
- The Ending. The ending of the story is... without a doubt, one of the worst endings I have seen in an ARPG. It honestly feels like there was supposed to be more to the cutscene that was left out. My friend and I found ourselves just shocked that the story just ended in a way where... we honestly don't even know what happened. Did we win? Did we lose? What happened to Val? It's implied she's somehow still alive... Heimlock? Gernese? And afterwards, you are lead into "The last six months have been a blur." I just feel like the story never completed and that there was supposed to be one more act, and they cut it. Ultimately a very unsatisfying end to the game's story.
- Lack of Hybrid options. If you want to go Hybrid, especially between Caster and Melee/Ranged, you are trapped into one option, the Catalyst. There is no other method besides a few spell options like Infinity Blades allowing Warrior spells for a little after each cast or Uniques that allow access to Lightning spells. This is especially damning when Hybrid builds are some of the coolest ones, but lock you into Pistol/One Hand Sword or One Hand Sword/Catalyst. No way to play a Mage Tank with Shield and Catalyst as both are offhand only.

Now, if it's got all of that bad, why do I still give it a thumbs up? Because the Devs are working to fix it still. And I've been enjoying the game for what it is worth. I do suggest people be wary as the game has a lot of bugs right now and if they aren't willing to be patient to let the devs fix them, they shouldn't get this game. As there are a lot right now. I do think that the game is still playable and the content enjoyable. Some bugs may cause you to fall back slightly or need to restart, but those ones have been rare and I've never had a CTD. And the ones that forced me to restart have been fixed by now.

Now, I would heavily suggest waiting for those who are unsure. And if the Devs ever stop updating the game in a state where it's still way too buggy, I will fix this review to a thumbs down. As that's the main thing keeping me recommending at this point. I'll try to leave comments on and respond to people, even if they disagree (which I fully expect people to do and they are justified to do so).

While I haven't exactly played the game lately, I can definitely say that I never was really a fan of Metroidvania style games. Not that the genre is bad, just was never my cup of tea. Now, I got Hollow Knight on a sale initially and figured I might as well try it. I had some leftover steam money after all, and couldn't figure out what else to get. And boy was that a good decision. As of the time of writing this review, I have 61.9 hours in the game and I've enjoyed them all. Now, I'm no speedrunner. I take things slow and enjoy the scenery and story and I must say, Hollow Knight has both of those in ample qualities. For those of you out there that may have never run this game slow to take it all in, I suggest it. It really is worth it.

While it is a good idea I dislike the story. It's so much of telling and not really showing that it gets really stale really quickly. I still think if you like turn based games with romance then you'll like the game, but if you really depend on story like I do then you may be disappointed.

Edit: I should point out that I have played a majority of the demos posted by WW and was really looking forward to their steam release. My favorites would be Spirited Hearts (Which I ended up buying awhile ago) and Heileen (Though I have yet to get the full version). They are a good company, but I still was a little disappointed in the story quality. I do think it is a good game, just not the one for me.

Edit 2: Grammar and Spelling.
