Years ago, I would enjoy watching movies like Top Secret, Airplane, Hot Shots!, and the Naked Gun movies based off the short-lived Police Squad! shows. Although they were made for my father's generation, they were witty, goofy, and successfully lampooned common movie tropes and themes in a way that didn't make you think any less of what they were making fun of. Although I was a bit younger than the intended audience at the time, there was still plenty for me to take in and have a good laugh over.

There's nothing like a good send-up. Unfortunately, the genre-themed movies of the last two decades paled in comparison to the great ones like those I mentioned previously. Some of the gags would be written and performed well, but they'd have trouble holding up in terms of overarching theme, scene composition, and sufficient depth of the characters. There'd always be a sense of disappointment when you realized the gags were obviously written before the characters. As example, I'd point to Star Wars vs. Spaceballs outperforming Austin Powers vs. the Powers' sequels. It's extremely difficult to pull off a parody of genre.

What Kung Fury does most eloquently is hearken back to the decade of the 1980s with all of its flamboyance and technical transience yet still find a way to weave in the ultra-violence and digital decadence of the 1990s. It could be argued that Police Squad! did something similar in finding a way to combine the slapstick comedy and wit of the 1930s/40s era Three Stooges with what was best about the crime dramas like Dragnet in the 1950s. Each has taken about two decades to allow the genres it has mixed to marinate into something incredibly funny and smart.

Kung Fury has taken from the style and intentional futility of modern parodies like Garth Marenghi's Darkplace and Danger 5 and mastered it. I laughed at the intentional tracking errors and cell phones from experience but I know people younger than I will laugh just as hard even though they didn't experience it first hand. This is the golden age of David Zucker modernly personified. Enjoy.
