I think it's more cool to perform the jump in first person rather than watching the cube do it. Plus, the puzzle is a bit more complex that way (you're in one side of the map when the cube is in the other one). It sucks that you sometimes get stuck at the panel, but I rarely need more than 3 attempts to perform it... just press the back key when you're falling down and it should work... ;)

Your solution is not the intended one but it comes dangerously close!
I've just released an update blocking your solution and other ones reported at ThinkingWithPortals. The correct way to solve it hasn't changed, but the puzzle has become slightly more complicated now.
