Although that does mean that its working, something is just preventing it from finding whats nearby. Try disabling all addons except itself and restarting your game, see if it works then?
Are you getting an error that prevents it from ricocheting? Or does it simply not occur?
If it doesn't occur (without error) then that means something else is either interfering with it, could be the weapon you're holding or the npc you've fired at or some other mod that changes things around too much.
If you really want to be sure, spawn a bot in a private mp server using the "bot" command and headshot them with some default hl2 weapon and see if it transfers. You'll know if it tried to transfer if you hear a bell after the original moneyshot.

And nope, it does use the same beam rendering system which is why they may look the same. I may change the colour of the beam to be based on the physgun or player colour in the future though.
on that note is this based on the ultrakill coin mechanics addon? effect looks identical which is cool
