This syandana is spectacular.
Perhaps mirror it? It would be necessary to leave the two sides separated at top, leaving the "spine" section visible. Some meshing or weaving pattern of the "feathers" where it currently flairs wide would also maintin your unique overlapping, layered feel.
Have you tried bending a bit the falling part around side of the body as it falls down? Might look more natural.
Maybe is just that physics aren't applied in the rendering appearing here.
