Description

"Bridgehead" is a PvE Wave Mode for the Eichenlaub Tuning Pack. Based on the Festung Win Condition, it is playable on any map, solo or coop, with US or British forces vs ai-controlled Ostheer or OKW.

FACTION-BASED SCENARIOS

USF: ARDENNES ASSAULT
Inspired by the Battle of the Bulge, as US Forces you will field defensive units with little to no armored support against aggressive German Panzer armies.

UKF: A BRIDGE TOO FAR
Your unit has reached the landing zone. Inspired by Airborne operations in Normandy and the Netherlands, playing as British Forces will see you defend your dropzone against German counter-attacks. Armored support is far away - everyting has to be brought in by air.

HOW TO PLAY
  • PREREQUISITES
Download the Eichenlaub Tuning Pack and all its requirements.

  • GAME SETUP
Open a custom game lobby and follow the image guide above. Especially when playing the British Forces, choosing an open map with space for Gliders is advised. Make sure to match the Win Condition to your team in the lobby, that all players pick the same faction, either USF or UKF, and all AI are an opposing German Faction. Pick between the available options to customize game length.

  • COMMANDERS
Eichenlaub and the Bridgehead Win Condition use the excellent Commander Preview UI by Janne252. All Commanders available to the US and UKF Forces are tailored to this game mode and are defensive in nature.

  • PHASE 1 - WARM UP
During the first Phase, players are given time to choose a Commander. The Map is entirely under your control, except for a buffer zone to the enemy base. Units cannot fire or move during this phase. When a Commander is chosen, you will receieve a starting force, extra resources and the next Phase is triggered.

  • PHASE 2 - PREPARATION
Your Intelligence Officer will now brief you on the situation. Listen to him throughout the game for information. A timer will start to count down to the first enemy attack. The AI will not leave their base. Income is limited, so prepare your defensive line with the resources at your disposal. Construction units are given access to different mines, bunkers, obstacles and emplacements.

  • PHASE 3 - COMBAT
When the preparation timer runs out, the enemy will start their first wave attack. Repel each wave by destroying the majority of their fighting force. Use short periods of rest between the waves to recover. If the enemy captures more than half of the victory points, your tickets will count down until you have re-established control.

  • HOW TO WIN
Hold at least half of the Victory Points to not run out of tickets. The attackers lose tickets for each wave repelled, the final wave must be defeated to win the game.

  • SUPPORT
After each successful defense against a wave, players receive a manpower boost and a chance for air dropped supplies to your base. As US Forces, Reinforcements may randomly join your forces throughout the game. When the situation is most dire, a Relief force may even arrive to turn the tide.

KNOW YOUR ENEMY
  • LOCKDOWN
All sectors, except Victory Points, take longer to capture - but once lost, sectors can not be recaptured. Keeping lines of communication secure is crucial.

  • AI DIVISIONS
The AI will randomly pick themed archetype formations, such as Fallschirmjaeger- or Panzer-Divisions, making every match unique. Each wave sent will consist of a unique subset of that division's troops.

  • REAR GUARD
When the majority of a wave's fighting force is destroyed, the rest will retreat and prepare for the next assault. Only support weapons remain on the field as a rear guard. Consider this when trying to take back territory.

  • DIFFICULTY
Difficulty levels drastically alter the playing field. While Easy AI will send infantry and armor mindlessly into your lines, Normal AI will support them with team weapons, and Hard AI or Expert AI will probe your weak points, use off-map support and may field super-heavy tanks.

  • FINAL ASSAULT
The final wave is especially tough to beat. Listen to your officer and take cover.

  • TANK TRAPS & MINES
Tank traps and mines may seem a cost-efficient way to block off parts of the map, but be aware of enemy engineers. They will attempt to spot and destroy mines or blow up tank traps with explosive charges.

REQUIREMENTS
  • Bridgehead relies on voice lines of the Ardennes Assault DLC campaign. It is therefore a hard requirement to have the DLC installed.

  • This Win Condition pack is part of the Eichenlaub Mod and requires all its dependencies to work. Due to code interdependence, none of the parts will function on their own.

  • Please make sure that you have subscribed to all required items. You may visit the Eichenlaub Steam Collection for easy subscription.

FAQ
  • Why do my British officers speak American English?
The Mod-Tools do not allow for importing of custom voice lines, so I can only use what's in the game already. Since the British forces never received any ToW or Story content, audio from the Ardennes Assault DLC is the best I can do.

  • Will Bridgehead include the Red Army at some point?
It's possible, but not overnight. The framework is in place, but setting up a new briefing script and creating customized defensive commanders is a sizable effort.

  • Why aren't regular British ground forces represented?
The British Faction in CoH 2 is by nature very defensive, with access to several emplacements and structures even outside of their commanders. Therefore, I wanted to add something new in the shape of the Airborne forces, and something especially challenging. The addition of standard British Army formations is not possible in the current version of Bridgehead, but something to consider for the future.

Anyway, the operation will show the invalid camp, I promise I did all the above.

Hi Blitzkrieg, there are two Bridgehead Modes to choose from in the lobby. bridgehead [US] and Bridgehead [UK]. Make sure to pick the correct one!

The mode keeps saying that players need to choose USF (US Forces), and I am.
But it keeps saying invalid factions...

Personally I'd prefer it if you could retake points. It makes the game frontlines more flexible and makes counter-attacks to retake territory between waves very engaging.

Hi Bob, initially it was simply supposed to be an extra challenge for Festung, but that lead to too many options in the menu. So instead of discarding the idea, I turned it into the default setting for Bridgehead. In many ways, Brideghead is an evolution of the Festung script, and I still think about adding the territory lock to Festung as well. Hope that explains it a bit.

What was the design reasoning in being unable to retake lost territory in Bridgehead unlike Festung. Not that I'm complaining since it makes me focus more on projecting multiple defensive lines (though the final artillery barrage can be quite punishing if you've got no more room to fall back).

With some way of generating income though, of course.

Oh, because it's the most fun imo. Progressively becoming harder, and you expanding your defenses so the battle becomes more dense

Hi Bob, as stated in the FAQ, it’s possible but I currently don’t have the time for it. Maybe in the future, no promises though

Wonder if they'll ever be a soviet defence.
