The Ash County Fire Department (ACFD) was founded in 1916 in response to the devastating Great Wildfires of 1892, which highlighted the urgent need for organized firefighting in the region. Over the years, ACFD has faced numerous challenges, including the Wildfire of 1929, the Ash City Blaze in 1955, and the catastrophic drought fires of 2014. Notably, during the Wildfire Crisis of 2020, the department coordinated extensive evacuations and emergency responses, showcasing its commitment to community safety and preparedness.

Key figures in ACFD’s history include Commissioner Harold “Hal” Jensen, who modernized the department in the mid-20th century, and Chief Eleanor Brown, the first female chief, who championed community engagement. Currently led by Chief David Martinez, ACFD emphasizes technology, mental health resources for firefighters, and community outreach through events like the annual “Fire Safety Fair.” As Ash County continues to confront challenges from wildfires and climate change, ACFD remains dedicated to protecting the diverse communities it serves.
