Mega Man (RoA)

Description
Mega Man blasts his way into Rivals of Aether! Based heavily on the classic Mega Man games, he sports a moveset that is faithful to the original games - with a twist! Open your weapon menu to equip the weapon that is best suited to the situation and your playstyle! As a zoner, Mega Man is equipped with many projectiles to keep his opponents at bay, but he is also able to engage in close combat with his normal attacks.

Gimmick #1 - Special Weapons

He has been equipped with “Robot Master Weapons” that embody the abilities of the original 8 Rivals of Aether cast members! Just like the original games, Mega Man can choose any of these special weapons, giving him many options in combat. However, having this many options comes at a cost; each weapon has a limited amount of energy to use and that energy does not refill on losing a life, much like the original games. If you are running low, call in Eddie to help fill your weapon energy!

Gimmick #2 - Allies

If you ever feel like Mega Man could use some help, call upon allies from the classic games, including Rush (Uspecial), Eddie (Dspecial), and even Beat (Uair only)! These allies all have a unique purpose and can even stay on the battlefield for your opponents to use, so be careful!

Specials

Nspecial - Weapon Select : Mega Man opens the weapon select menu to choose from the 8 different special weapons based on the original ROA cast. Press and hold Nspecial to open the weapon select menu, and use your directional stick to select the weapon you want to equip. Release Nspecial to close the menu and commit the selection. The weapon name, icon, and energy will appear above the hud. Each weapon has its own energy meter and it can only be refilled with weapon energy pellets that have been dispensed by Eddie (Despecial) on stage.

Fspecial - Special Weapon : Mega Man shoots the special weapon that he has equipped. As the weapons are used, the energy bar will decrease over time for that weapon. If no weapon is selected, or if there is not enough energy to fire the weapon, a puff of harmless smoke will come out instead. Each weapon has unique properties:

  • Z.Fireball - shoots Zetterburns fireball; ignites opponents
  • O.Bubbles - shoots Orcane’s bubbles; stalls falling momentum
  • W.Twister - a melee attack like Wrastor’s twister; press and hold to influence duration
  • K.Rock - pulls a rock similar to Kraggs; throw it in any direction once held
  • F.Combust - draws in smoke, like Forsburn, to charge a powerful explosion; press and hold to charge
  • E.Icicles - shoots Etalus’ icicles from above; freeze grounded opponents
  • A.Cloud - shoots a controllable cloud, like Absa; press and hold to control duration
  • M.Vine - releases Maypul’s vine whip for a ranged melee attack

Uspecial - Rush : Mega Man calls in his best friend; Rush! On the ground, Mega Man will summon Rush Coil, boosting him into the air. RC will remain on stage for Mega Man and other players to use until his energy is depleted. In the air, Mega Man will summon Rush Jet, a slow moving platform. RJ can only be summoned once until Mega Man touches solid ground again, so use the indicator icon above the hud to know if RJ is available. Press and hold special when summoning RJ to influence the upward and downward velocity slightly. Only one instance of Rush can be out at a time, and calling Rush again will despawn the original instance; use this to your advantage!

Special - Eddie : Mega Man calls on Eddie to help him top-up his energy resources! Eddie will linger on the stage dispensing up to 5 energy pellets for his weapons and HP, with higher value items being dispensed the longer Eddie is on stage. After a short period of time, any player on the stage can claim the energy pellets, so get them quickly! An opponent can also hit Eddie and put him on a long cooldown. Check the Eddie icon above the hud to see if he is available. You can dismiss Eddie by pushing Dspecial again, where his cooldown will be much less.

Normals with Special Properties

Utilt - Shoryuken: A powerful uppercut with a sweet-spot at the start of the attack. The sweet-spot deals increased damage/knockback when the target is on fire.

Dtilt - Slide: A low-profile sliding attack that covers short distances. This move can be jump-canceled upon successfully connecting the attack with a target.

Dattack - Proto Shield: A short bashing attack that gives Mega Man super armor for a short duration. Use it to close gaps with ease!

Dair: Mega Man’s iconic stage-start drop. Press jump shortly after hitting an enemy to cancel the drop.

The sprite work for this character is an original adaptation of the Capcom® series, Mega Man. While the artwork is largely original, the character contains assets (both VFX and SFX) that have been taken directly from the Mega Man games (Capcom®). This character also uses concepts, VFX and SFX taken directly from the Rivals of Aether base-game. I do not claim ownership of the assets and concepts that were taken from these sources.

was unsure with the sprites but this is a really fun mega man, the special weapons approach gives it a ton of character and makes it feel like a rivals crossover specifically, instead of just another smash moveset. great stuff

This is really well made but Ustrong and Dstrong are really silly.

Small suggestion, make the downsmash have the Mett come from below Megaman and attack both sides, causing megaman to spin/rotate like he does on elevators and such

Kickass character. Megaman's gameplay is kinda like Elliana's, where you have to creatively think of how to set up a kill, and I love that. I do have a few nitpicks though:
* Dtilt can't be canceled on the sourspot, which feels kinda unforgiving and clunky. Also kinda weird how Dtilt has a sourspot to begin with.
* The cost of certain moves feels questionable, like how K. Rock is very powerful, yet costs the same as the spark of Absa cloud.
* Dair has a tiny spike hitbox at the start of the move, which, why even have it at that point? The only thing I could possibly do with it is set up a tech chase and combo into Utilt, but that's about it.
* Dspecial is entirely luck based. I'll have to talk about this in the balance discussion, or I won't be able to fit it.

i do enjoy this character but the mechanic to switch between weapons does feel a bit slow. maybe you could switch down special and N special but it might just be me.

I love this Megaman, he has an interesting and pretty cool twist in his power gear, although I find the order of the special attacks strange, as if nspecial, dspecial and fspecial were rotated, other than that I love it, it fits perfectly with the style of RoA
