The design was inspired by the legends of Wendigo and Leshy.

The wendigo is described as an evil anthropomorphic creature. People who are lost in the forest, feeling cold and hungry, turn into a wendigo. It is said to cause its victims a sense of insatiable hunger, a desire to eat peo something not worth eating... and a tendency to kill other travelers lost in the forest.

The Leshy is a male creature of humanoid form, has the ability to take on any appearance, and can change his size and height. Leshy is famous for his tendency to mislead travelers and kidnap them. Leshy's attitude towards people can vary depending on how they interact with the forest.
