Oakley Subway Station

Headphones or big speakers are highly recommended for subway ambiance.

Oakley was once the most popular subway station in Ascot, mainly because it was one of the few back then. However a combination of scandals from the company owning it and technological evolution such as faster trains has rendered the subway useless the past 30 years. A major accident would then occur in one of the tunnels near it which all but put the final nail in the coffin for it. Now it's almost like as if everyone has forgotten about it. Despite it being such an integral part to Ascot's growth as a city, no one- not even the oldest person here remembers it. The only residents in Oakley nowadays are homeless people, junkies and the occasional rat here and there. Though oddly enough electricity here still runs.

Some three weeks ago, Alan Wake 2 released. I was heavily fascinated by the art direction the game has taken as it looked like a mixture of Control and some indie avant garde experimental film I've never heard of before. To be honest that already felt like the direction the studio was heading towards when I played Control. I'm not saying it's a bad thing at all, it definitely is one of the most unique looking big budget video games I have seen since... Control. And that sparked my interest.

I was watching some footage of Alan Wake inside of the abandoned New York subways. The area was littered with trash, graffiti and a whole lot of smoke. Not to mention the lighting looked striking with the volumetric effects used. I tried replicating this look in Source using func_dustcloud's to fake local volumetric fog. It worked so well I just had to turn it into an actual thing. And this map happened as a result.
