The 1997 Ford F-350 XL was the last year of the OBS Ford trucks. Manufactured until the end of 1997, these trucks were sold through 1996-1998.

Most F-350 XL's were Cab & Chassis trucks, and were upfitted at the dealer or at a service body dealer. These trucks also came with a 14 foot chassis option, only offered to drw (dually) F-350 XL's and F-Superduty's. However, a few number of single cab XL's with the factory pick-up box were made.

These trucks were usually equipped with a 7.3 Powerstroke or a 7.5L 460 V8. However, a few trucks were equipped with the 5.8L 351 Windsor V8. These trucks were also usually equipped with the E4OD 4-Speed Automatic Transmission, or the ZF5 5-Speed Manual Transmission. A few of these trucks were equipped with the 3-Speed Automatic Transmission, however once again this was not a common option in 1997 as the E4OD and ZF5 were highly rated transmissions.

This truck comes with the E4OD Automatic Transmission, and the 7.3 Powerstroke Turbo Diesel V8. The 7.3 Powerstroke's started production in 1994.5, and were put in a select few trucks in late 1994, phasing out the IDI and IDI Turbo. Most Powerstroke trucks were produced in 1995, 1996 and 1997.

Trucks with these engines are highly sought-after, and will usually cost more than gasoline trucks. These engines are known for their reliablility and simplicity, which is why they are so valuable. These engines often go over 400,000 miles before needing a rebuild, however some people have claimed to drive them over 700,000 miles before swapping the engine.
