Swinging into the fray for the Extended Workshop's Black Music Jam, Marti the Snake is a nimble rushdown fighter that represents important genres such as jazz and blues. A traveling musician from the town of Julesvale, Marti aims to share his music with the world.


Using his trusty tambourine tail, Marti will put notes in his staff on the fly as the fight goes on, up to a max of 4. There are three different kinds of notes he can store– a purple rimshot note, a green shake note, and a red drumbeat note. Marti gains rimshot notes from tilts, shake notes from aerials, and drumbeat notes from strongs and sweetspots from certain tambourine attacks. Some attacks, such as multihits, can even give him two different notes at once.

Marti can spend these notes to enhance his specials, with each kind giving him a unique boost! In general, rimshot notes grant him more range/movement, shake notes boost his damage, while drumbeat notes grant both benefits at the cost of being harder to get from precise or committal attacks.



Marti begins to cycle through his stored notes. Parrying cancels this and saves your position. Upon inputting Nspecial again while cycling, Marti will fire the selected note as a projectile– each kind gives him a unique one!

Rimshot: A disjointed slash with some range directly in front of Marti.
Shake: A short-ranged, multihit burst.
Drumbeat: A very fast fireball that has the most range and deals the most damage of the three notes.


Marti flings himself forward and slams onto the ground for a two-hit attack. When using this move in the air, he will plummet downwards, which can be cancelled with an airdodge. Spending a note on this move will enhance it:

Rimshot: Moves him forward further.
Shake: Increases the move's damage output.
Drumbeat: Grants the benefits of both.


Marti performs a spinning jump attack, good for catching people in the air off-guard or getting surprise KO's off the top. Like Fspecial, spending a note on this move will enhance it in different ways:

Rimshot: Grants him a higher upwards boost.
Shake: Increases the amount of damage it deals.
Drumbeat: Grants the benefits of both.


Marti's main form of stage control, in which he puts a big tambourine down on the stage. He can bounce off of it, granting him a burst of movement. Using this move will store any notes he had in the tamb-poline, which allows him to gain more notes to use– jumping on the tamb-poline while you still have room in your staff for notes will cause Marti to get them back. Be careful, though, since opponents can destroy or jump on it themselves, causing Marti to lose his notes.

Using Nspecial on the tamb-poline will cause it to deal a small burst of damage and store the corresponding note inside of it, while using Fspecial on it will consume it to extend the range of the slamming hit.


Using this move on his tamb-poline will grant him a very significant boost in movement– try using this to make up for his low double jump.

Landing the second hit of DAttack will copy the last note Marti gained for his staff. Try using this move after gaining a drumbeat note to accumulate a good stock of them!

Marti also has three taunts - a regular one, and two more by pressing up or down.
