A summary of the Manasoo's history

The SS Manasoo was a great lakes ship that served under Owen Sound Transportation company during 1927-1928. She was not called the Manasoo when she was built in 1888. She was named the Macassa, where she ran a ferry boat service from Hamilton to Toronto. She was lengthened in 1905. She had a rolling problem. Even in small waves she would rock side to side. After that she was included in the merger of Hamilton Steamboat company and Niagara Navigation company(NNC). She would serve under NNC for a few years until she was sold to a other company which after a few years of service they sold her to Owen Sound Transportation. In 1927, she would go through a refit and complete overhaul and would be renamed. By late 1927 she was ready to sail. The ship was set for taking cargo from island to island with her side loading doors. In 1928 she was given cattle pens. She was finally in service. On September 11th 1928, during her last voyage she set out for Owen Sound, a port city on the Georgian bay of lake Huron. With 21 souls aboard the Manasoo sailed in the bay with no problems but then around this time the crew and few passengers noticed the ship rocking increasingly more from left to right. Some time around 2:30 AM the Manasoo listed far over to port and the crew had to push barrels with sand in them to one side of the ship. As crew were trying to prepare the ship a passenger gangway caved in letting water inside of the stern. The list came back but they had to push the car that they were transporting to one side to hopefully balance the ship, but when they pulled out the chaulks the car flew to the wrong side of the ship and she capsized on to her side. The crew began to abandon ship, the cattle inside began panicking and tearing apart their pens. As the crew prepared a lifeboat it was smashed off its davit, the other three lifeboats could not be unsecured and went down with the ship when it capsized. Luckily for 6 men, a life raft made it off the ship and was their only hope for survival. They looked back and saw the bow of the Manasoo rising out of the water. As men who didn't find safety cried for help a few cattle were seen swimming around the ship but would die from freezing or drowning. The Manasoo had sunk on September 15th, the 4th day of the voyage. The 6 men spent 60 hours in the raft with 1 man dying. After the Manasoo was two days late to port a search party was sent out to find any survivors. The 5 men were found and they were taken to Owen Sound.
