Depoe Bay & Sitka Lumber Railroad

Description
First, thank you to the community. When you read through this description, you’ll see this couldn’t exist without the efforts of many people.

With 14 bridges and 8 tunnels, Depoe Bay and Sitka Lumber Railroad is by far my most ambitious layout to date. The layout is based on David Dahlstrom’s N scale layout available here: http://www.scarm.info/layouts/track_plans.php?ltp=186

Performance was important when detailing. I was going to make sure my system only got down to 50 FPS, but then I added the miniature terrain. I wasn’t going to add the mini to keep performance high, but it felt odd without it, like you were floating in the clouds. If I had planned on the miniature portion in the first place the transition would have been smoother; live & learn. The mini is likely a little taller than it should be, while most of the time it interacts with the weather effects nicely, occasionally it looks odd. Regardless, performance is considerably better than my remake of the NG Logging Camp, partly due to the new grass.

If you want to know more about how to generate terrain, please see my guide and reach out if you need help: https://steamproxy.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2376794936
But fair warning it takes a lot of work. The main terrain went through 35 revisions and the miniature went through 14; that’s a lot of back and forth from Blender to RL, and I still see some spots I could have “fixed”.

If you read this far you should know there are 4 butterflies and as of me writing this, I can’t find 2 of them. They’re around here somewhere… where did I put them? They like flowers, right?

Also, I think there is a memory leak when you load saved train state in camera mode, doing so makes my memory usage tick up every time.

This map is incredible! I can't even begin to think of how much time this must have taken you. I love all of the little details and things, and the overall map has this "feel" to it that is very, very nice. Amazing work! I'll definitely take some inspiration from this for a layout I'm (mind-numbingly slowly) starting to work on.

(Shame I can only run it at 5 fps, but I guess that's what I get for trying to run it on a laptop :steamhappy:)
