2018年初，叙利亚政府军在国内的战局中取得优势，从2018年2月18日开始，叙利亚政府军发动“大马士革钢铁”攻势，逐渐收复反对派叛军在大马士革地区的最后根据地—东古塔地区。

2018年4月7日，东古塔地区主要城镇杜马发生一起疑似化学武器袭击，控制着杜马的伊斯兰叛军集团报称，叙利亚政府军的直升机从高空投下装有氯气和沙林毒气的桶装炸弹。多个医疗、监测和民间活动组织，包括“白头盔”也如此报道。事件发生后，美国、英国、法国指责叙利亚政府应为化学武器袭击负责，叙利亚的主要盟国俄罗斯和伊朗则坚称这是一场则喊捉贼的嫁祸行动。

第二天，美国总统特朗普就在推特上声称要让巴沙尔为此付出代价，法国总统马克龙发表声明表示，法国的“红线已经被跨越”，英国首相特蕾莎·梅命令在地中海巡逻的皇家海军潜艇准备在周末前对叙利亚发起巡航导弹打击。

2018年4月14日凌晨，美英法对叙利亚三处“化学武器设施”进行大规模巡航导弹打击，目标分别为疑似研究化学武器的巴尔赞研究与开发中心，一处的化学武器储存点和一处化学武器掩体。

In early 2018, Syrian armed forces gained advantage in the warfare, starting from Feb 18th, Syrian armed forces carried out Operation Damascus Steel, steadily recaptured the Ghouta region, the last critadel of the rebels.

April 7th, 2018, Douma, one of the main towns in the Ghouta region suffered from a suspected chemical weapon attack, the Islam rebel groups who were controlling Douma reported that, helicopters of Syrian armed forces had dropped container bombs with chlorine and Sarin gas inside. Multiple medical, surviliance and NGOs, including "White Helmets" reported as also. After the event occured, the governments of United States, United Kingdom and France condemned Syrian government to be responsible for the chemical attack, while the main allies of Syria, Russia and Iran claimed that the chemical attack was a false flag operation.

On the second day, US president Donald Trump said on Twitter, "President Putin, Russia and Iran are responsible for backing animal Assad. Big price to pay." French president Emmanuel Macron claimed in a statement that the red line of France had been crossed, and the prime minister of UK Theresa May ordered a RN submarine patrolling Mediterranean to prepare launching cruise missile attacks to Syria before the weekend.

In the early morning of April 14th, US, UK, and France launched massive cruise missile attacks on three suspected Syrian "chemical weapon facilities", including Barzah Scientific Research Center, Him Shanshar Military Installation Storage Site, and Him Shanshar Military Installation Bunker.
