Description

The Tree

Alders are a common member of the birch family found extensively across the northern hemisphere. I modeled a relatively generic sampling of them to try and capture the variety found internationally, but I used the red alder of the Pacific Northwest as my main point of reference. These can pretty easily stand in for similar birch or ash trees.

These deciduous trees live fast, short lives, and their fire resistance makes them good natural firebreaks. They quickly populate rivers and wetlands, although some varieties can thrive in drier biomes as well.

Introduction

This is a pack of 10 trees and 1 stump. It's a winter variation of my Alders, which are available in normal green and autumn variations as well.

You'll want to fiddle with your graphics settings to get these looking right at a distance. I recommend something like Render It to improve anti aliasing. I did the best I could, but the game still struggles to render the tiny branches properly.

Technical

- All 11 assets in the pack share a single 512 x 1024 texture. The Loading Screen Mod should eliminate the vast majority of functional RAM requirement for this pack.

- Tri counts are low-ish for trees of these sizes. Only the chonkiest tree breaks 1k, with most of the others hovering around 400 - 700. Performance in CSL is a slippery target but anecdotally I've found these to be some of my less taxing trees.

- I did NOT alter tree sway on these assets. Based on my experience with the previous packs, I now recommend using the Tree Movement Control mod to reduce sway, which can eliminate sway on LODs as well, and doubles for random tree rotation.

- Tree LOD Fix is critical as always, and the larger trees may warrant Ultimate Level of Detail and/or Adaptive Prop Visibility Distance.

@zefilipe - agreed!

@Splifsend - That's definitely a problem with the LOD generation and can only really be solved by turning up the resolution with the Tree LOD Fix mod.

It's particularly troublesome for trees like this with many small branches; the game tries to best-guess a 2D sprite based on the model, and when it doesn't have many pixels to work with, it favors filling them in over leaving them transparent. So the effect is that the LOD is far too opaque. The color itself is actually pretty accurate, but you just shouldn't be seeing that much of it, haha.

Oh we need a Seasons-DLC very badly. So many nice Spring-Summer-Fall-Winter-versions of trees now on the WS. It‘s a pity they all remain static.

I managed to calm it down a little by changing my skybox with cupemap replacer

@Splifsend: At LOD distance or while still close enough to render the proper model? Can you share a screenshot and mod settings? I haven't observed that behavior.

There aren't many bare trees like this on the Workshop so it's great to see you thought of these.
