Glacier Express

Description
Overview:

This is a 3:1 MEGALOMANIAC map (please enable experimental map sizes) of the Glacier Express Route through the Alps of Central Switzerland. The Glacier Express is a meter-gauge railway line that runs from Zermatt and the Matterhorn in the west to Chur, Davos, and St. Moritz under the Piz Bernina in the east. St. Moritz did not fit on this map sadly. The Glacier Express began in 1930 and was run by three companies, the Brig-Visp-Zermatt Bahn (BVZ), the Furka Oberalp Bahn (FO) and the Rhaetian Railway (RhB). Today, it is run by the Matterhorn-Gotthard Bahn (MGB) and the RhB. The line begins in the Mattertal at the car-free resort town of Zermatt, traverses the valley of the Rhone in Valais, through the Furka Pass to Andermatt, through the Oberalp Pass to Disentis, and down into the valley of the Rhein, towards Chur. The line then backtracks up several vallies past Filisur to Davos and St. Moritz.

Areas included on this map include the Swiss cantons of Valais, Uri, Ticino, Graubunden, Glarus, and St. Gallen. Small portions of Liechtenstein, and several Italian alpine valleys above Lago Maggiore are also present.

In addition to the main route of the Glacier Express, several other railways are present and constructible on this map, including: the Bern-Loetschberg-Simplon Railway from Goppenstein in the north to Domodossola, Italy, and on the FS Domodossola-Milan line further south into Italy; the Gotthard Railway and Tunnel from Erstfeld in the north to Biasca in the canton of Ticino in the South; SBB lines from Chur towards Zurich and Bregenz; portions of the SBB Valais Line; and a good amount of the Rhaetian Railway network is able to be constructed.

This map was made with real heightmap data from the Tangram Heightmapper.

As this is a map of the Alps, it is very mountainous and very challenging. Other than the valleys of the Rhone, the Rhein, and some in the south, it isn't flat. At all. So good luck growing those cities. I suggest a population mod to help reduce sprawl and keep things looking semi-realistic. There is no water transport on this map.

Towns & Industries:

Major towns on this map include: Visp, Brig, Domodossola, Locarno, Biasca, Andermatt, Disentis, Chur, Thusis, Davos, Landquart, Walenstadt, Glarus, and Vaduz, Liechtenstein. There are also many other small towns to give passenger networks some viability. Adding in some other small towns with ploppable buildings is also a good way to create those small mountain villages without it turning into a sprawling city late game.

There are no industries on this map. Place them as you wish.

Mods:

The map will still load without the required mods, but will look best with them installed and enabled.

The Alpine Climate - 700m
The Blue Water Textures are necessary for several lakes and the Rhone and Rhein Rivers to appear.

Sandbox mode is suggested for placement of industries and removal/addition of towns as desired.

Hope you enjoy!
