New Haven-Springfield Modern

Description
Route Description:
The New Haven-Springfield Line, commonly referred to by rail enthusiasts as just the Springfield Line, is a 62-mile (100 km) higher-speed railroad line that runs from Union Station in New Haven, Connecticut to Union Station in Springfield, Massachusetts. The line, while not technically part of the Northeast Corridor (NEC), is a direct branch of it, with frequent Amtrak service along the line connecting to the NEC in New Haven. Other than some of the tracks around New Haven and Springfield, the route is entirely owned and operated by Amtrak.

The New Haven-Springfield Line dates back to 1844, when it commenced operations as part of the Hartford & New Haven Railroad (H&NH). In 1872 the H&NH Railroad was merged into the New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railroad (NYNH&H), which operated the Springfield Line until its demise in 1968. From 1968 the line was operated by the Penn Central Transportation Company, until its closure in 1976 when it was finally handed over to Amtrak. Until November 2004, Amtrak operated Northeast Regional service from New Haven to Boston via the Springfield Line.

Presently, the New Haven-Springfield Line carries a variety of Amtrak, CTRail, and Freight traffic. Amtrak services that use the line include the Vermonter, the New Haven-Springfield Shuttle (known since 2019 as the HartfordLine), the Valley Flyer, and Springfield bound Northeast Regional trains. Freight service is also provided on weekdays, with the Connecticut Southern Railroad (CSOR) and CSX (Formerly Pan Am Railways) sharing parts of the line with Amtrak and CTRail trains. As of June 2018, there are short sections of track that allow for 110 MPH (177 km/h) Amtrak operations, making the New Haven-Springfield line one of the few higher-speed diesel Amtrak routes outside of the NEC. Except for a brief section of single-track between Windsor, Connecticut and Enfield, Connecticut, the line is fully double-tracked.

Additional operating instructions can be found in the links section below.
