BetterLoading

Description
Github Link: https://github.com/SamboyCoding/RimworldBetterLoading

Now with 1.4 support (in beta, not fully tested) and 1.5 support (even less tested!)!

For best results, please put this mod ABOVE core in the mod list.

Compatible with rimworld 1.0, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, and 1.5 (1.0 is on a very old version of the mod, though, and 1.1-1.4 aren't being updated anymore)

If you see any progress bar turn red, it means that a mod errored while loading - check the in-game log for details

If you encounter issues, there are a number of ways to contact me - these are listed on github. Leaving a comment here will eventually reach me but it may take several hours, while other methods could be much quicker.

BetterLoading aims to improve your game loading experience.

In vanilla RimWorld, once you get past about 50 mods, the process of loading up the game largely consists of staring at a repeating "..." prompt for anywhere up to several minutes.

It's better now than it used to be, but in extreme cases, this can still take up to half an hour. And for that half-hour, you're just staring at that "...".

This mod doesn't improve load times. But what it does do is give you an actually useful loading screen so you can see that something is, in fact, happening.

It also reduces (though doesn't remove, due to technical limitations) the freezing that can be observed towards the end of the loading process.

Experimental: Mod Dependency Helper

I've been seeing an increasing number of weird issues involving mods not loading properly. BetterLoading has been able to detect this and refuse to load since 2.3.0.0, and as of 2.4.0.0 it will attempt to work out which mods are required to fix the mods that are screwing up, and whether you've got them loaded but in the wrong order, you haven't got them loaded, or you haven't got them installed - this info can be found in the in-game log, assuming you don't have so many errors that the log no longer works (which is about 300).

Incompatibilities, Interactions, and Workarounds

There is a known bug for users running Rimworld on Linux where running both BetterLoading and Simple Sidearms will cause the game to crash once it's almost finished loading. Unfortunately, this is proving very difficult to fix.

Startup Impact appears to work with BetterLoading (at least on Windows), but some of its data will be missing. If you encounter any issues and are running it, try disabling it first before reporting.

Some issues have been discovered with mods that override textures not working if (and only if) Combat Extended is installed, but I've yet to work out how to fix this.

RimThemes adds its own loading screen that overrides this mod's one, but you can turn that off in the RimThemes settings which will allow BetterLoading to function.

Is this imcompatible with Combat Extended? I'm getting a error on rimpy saying this is not comp. with CE

Yeah, that 1.5 support is definitely experimental. Love the presentation and actually being able to see what's loading when the game typically just hangs on an unresponsive screen, but pretty much immediately ran into issues with other mods not loading correctly

Across a few reboots, ReBuild; Doors and Corners disappeared from my in-game mod options, like the entire category was just gone (this happened to several other mods too). Seemed random as to which mods wouldn't load because the error log had different results occasionally. During one start up, I somehow loaded into the main menu when the main progress bar was only at 27%, lots of red errors in the log from that one. Everything went right back to normal as soon as I removed BetterLoading from my mod list

So, just as a heads up for anyone wanting to try this, take note of the disclaimers

Yes it will still write in the log. Also in my experience forcing the game to run the windows version (using proton) on steam deck works better when playing modded than the native Linux version.

Hello, I’m on steamdeck(Linux :steamfacepalm: ) and having trouble loading my game to the main menu, I used this and it showed a red bar and a warning for something but I can’t exactly use the in game log to check it out cause I can’t ever reach the main menu with this POS(the steamdeck not your mod)

Does it still write in the log even if it doesn’t reach the main menu or am I boned?

@Halboffen It should be logged anyway

So the loading screen is showing blue bars unless something goes wrong. In that case, it becomes red and says that something went previously wrong.

But it happens so fast that I can't catch it. Is there a way to log it so that I can go through the messages to figure out what went wrong?

This mod is like installing a glass door in an elevator. It’s not necessarily faster, but seeing the progress makes it feel quicker and lets you witness the actual movement.

@SAMBOY063 Thank you for taking from your time to respond to me !
Also dont worry i read the description just i love clarifications.

Thanks for you amazing work !

(i dont even use all of those problematic mods anyway eheh)

@Squaul Unless you're using combat extended or simple sidearms it should work. No, it doesn't currently tell you what's crashing. Also as per below apparently your HUD may disappear if you use RimThemes.

And there *used* to be an issue where it would impact the loading screen time, but that has been fixed for years at this point. So it shouldn't have any impact.
