I bought and played rust during legacy but didn't start playing seriously until the EXP system. I didn't mind this because at this point in my life I had the time and availability to play rust consistently over the span of many weeks. The change to components was welcome however as it introduced a FULL reset with every wipe, allowing all players to start on an equal field. I'm not saying that components were perfect, but they definitely allowed a wider range of more casual players to have fun with the game while also being able to progress significantly.

This brings me to the main reason for making this post. I stopped playing rust almost exclusively because of the re-introduction of a multi-wipe progression system, This presents almost too much of a barricade for new players and dissuades more experienced players from just sitting down and playing a week-long wipe here and there.

A few months back I tried to introduce my friend to the game. We were having a feud with our neighbors, and my new friend inquired as of how we would be able to break through their one sheet metal door. I was about to tell him that if we worked hard through the night we would be able to farm components and sulfur and kill enough people that we would be able to do this. But then I remembered that we would also have to farm for the blueprints in order to make beancans and satchels and grind out scrap for workbenches. I told him this, and after that night he never played rust again because he didn't get to truly experience all it had to offer.

The current progression system not only discourages new players, but it dissuades veterans from coming back to the game for a short time because It this point in my life I have significantly less time that I can commit to farming over an entire 1-2 month cycle. I do however have a week here and there where I have time to play a wipe, but find myself dissuaded by that fact that others will have the ability to craft guns right off the bat with a T2 workbench.

What I'm saying isn't that Rust shouldn't be a hard game that weeds out the weak, merely a game that I should be able to play and excel at without dedicating a disproportionately large amount of time to the game. I am not complaining about blueprints or components in their core nature, I am merely proposing that they should be re-worked in a way that gives every player the same playing field at the start of the map wipe.

TL;DR - Multi-wipe progression systems provide too much of a barrier for new players to start, veteran players to return, and anyone that cant play only rust over that span of multiple weeks/months

Would recommend NOT to play this game because It isn't balance, maps, the devs, or anything in the game at all. It's the players. People will go out of their way to make sure you don't have fun, sometimes even when you're on the same side. There is no sense of cooperation or friendly competition. Almost all of my matches as survivor or killer leave me feeling disappointed, even when I win. It took me almost 300 hours to figure out why.

Outside of the game, DBD has a pretty great community. Inside it, however, it's one of the worst I've experienced, and I'm not sure anything can be done about that. I wonder if this is inherent in the asymmetrical game concept. In any case, it makes me kinda sad. I used to love playing DBD.
