You are starting the game by creating a character. After you create your character you create your world.

At the start of the game you are seeing backstory of your character and of the game. After, you are being carried by a Valkyrie to the spawn.

You are now in the world of Valheim, where you need to prove your battle skills.

You are basically starting with nothing.

Start collecting some branches and stones scattered around spawn, then create your first weapon and tool - the stone axe. Now you can chop your first tree and collect more wood. also at this stage you can make a hammer that let's you build structures - floors, roofs, walls. You may make a hole in your roof and at the center of your house to fit a campfire there. You see, without fire you can't sleep, also you can place some cooking racks to be able to cook food if needed. You may have created your first weapon and armor before or after building your first home, now you need to start exploring the island you are thrown onto. As you explore the island you may find vegvisirs, stones with a red glowing symbol on them that's the marker for the boss location. Find this boss and fight it.

After the first boss you can collect the trophy and place it on one of the standing stones with chains on the spawn. Doing that gives you the new ability, power of the Eikthyr, it reduces your stamina use. Also, you may have gotten yourself hard antlers, these are used to create your first pickaxe and later mine your first ores - copper and tin. Now where do you find these ores? At the new biome - Black forest. By progressing further in game you will need to find new biomes for new enemies, resources and bosses. There are some biomes - Meadows, Black forest, Swamp, Mountains, Plains, Mistlands, Ashlands and Deep north that doesn't serve any purpose yet.

That's it, you now know how to play the game, just start by making new weapons, armor and fight enemies and bosses, gain powers and become stronger for next locations. Also at some point you will need to make something you can travel on by the ocean. Ships are found in misc. category of building.

Also if you have enabled raids be ready to defend your home.
