Introduction

Where do I start with Read Dead Redemption 2. The game is phenomenal, the characters are excellent and the soundtrack is simply orgasmic. I truly do not exaggerate when I critique games and this game is no exception. The game offers a sprawling vast open country with dozens of activities that that player can get immersed in. It truly feels as if I am living in 1899 experiencing life as an outlaw. But there were small instances where things got peculiar, but never broke my immersion of RDR2.

Characters

Read Dead Redemption 2 probably has one of the greatest cast of characters in video game history. The only game that I can say remotely even competes with RDR2's characters is The Witcher Series (due to the strong foundation from the novels). The main character, Arthur Morgan is one of the most believable and sympathetic characters in any work of fiction. That is because of the touching voice acting Roger Clark brings to the table. Every word and emotion he puts into the character adds more empathy towards the player. Which leads to the game's touching ending. RDR2 is also filled with fabulous side characters that enhance the emotional attachment between the player and characters. Some side characters are a little bland and a little more screen time would have been better, but overall this is Rockstar's best cast of characters

Characters: 9.8/10

Story

RDR2 takes place in 1899 in Texas. This is a time when outlaws are an endangered species and man is moving to a more "civilized" world. The game challenges complex themes of man vs society and man vs man, and makes the player reevaluate the world we live in and how blessed we are to have a family that care's for us. The pacing of the story for the most part is good, but at times it does slow down to build character relations and attachments. Such as the saloon mission with Lenny. It felt like a bonding experience and overall enhanced the character relationships. Lastly, the story compared to Rockstar's last entry, (GTA 5) is much slower and less guns blazing (there are a lot of shoot outs though) but those quite times in RDR2 add a serene atmosphere that makes the player forget about the hardships of life. The story at times does fall short to western cliché, but the plot is original enough to overshadow those clichés.

Story: 9.9 /10

Gameplay

Similar to Rockstar's GTA 5 RDR2 has a very similar gameplay scheme. A lot of the animations are similar, and the main character feels very similar to the main characters in GTA 5. Rockstar has added more animations and drastically improved their physics engine to add to the immersion, but something about the animations feels a little too similar to me. But the main highlight in RDR2 when it comes to gameplay is the attention to detail. If I try to describe everything in this review it would take along time, so to short it down, nothing in RDR2 feels half baked and all the mechanics feel fleshed out and polished to perfection. Lastly, something RDR2 revolutionizes is the horse gameplay. RDR2 has the best horse gameplay to this date. Period. No game has ever had this much detail and things to do in a game, so by this alone RDR2's gameplay is perfect.

Gameplay: 10/10

Verdict

Overall, RDR2 is teetering to be a perfect game. And to some it maybe, but this is an unbias review on the main elements of a video game and to be "perfect" the delveloper(s) needs to surpass expectations by a few generations. But Rockstar almost does so. The game definitely is Rockstar's greatest game from a narrative perspective, but from a gameplay perspective some may prefer GTA 5's more fast paced action heavy gameplay, rather then RDR2's slow burn. Ultimately, RDR2 is a large step in the right direction for the industry and will for sure stand up to the test of time as one of the greatest video games to ever come out.

Final Score: 29.7/30 or 99%
