For me as a Linux gamer it runs without any problems using the continued version of the open-sourced game engine called dhewm3. I could download it from the Debian repos. Of course you'll need the game files but you can download them after purchase via steamcmd (also in Debian repos) as the steam client doesn't allow you to download a game not available for your platform. It doesn't have the problems with setting resolution etc. I just configured it in the options without having to edit the cfg file.
You didn't specify your OS and I can only share my experience with Linux but dhewm3 is also available for Windows so it might also solve the problem with resolution etc on Windows.
Modularity of the psu is mainly just aesthetics, I'd gladly help you on choosing things to make it look good like cables sleeves or extensions. DM me if you want any more advice <3
