What a conflicting game to review. Can I recommend this game? Yes. Can I recommend it to everyone? No.

Here's why:

Insanity's Blade is an arcade style action platformer that hearkens mightily back to the days of Rastan and Conan the Barbarian. Much like Rastan, you play as a great, scantily clad warrior, bent of getting revenge for the murder of his family and the destruction of his village. Throughout his quest, much like Rastan, he will wield various weapons and battle his way with said weapons through a variety of monster infested locales. Did I mention this is like Rastan?

When I say it's an arcade style game, I mean it seriously wants to be an arcade game. From the font of the text, to the loading screens, IB emulates classic arcade games to a T. This comes as both a hit and a miss: the super simple gameplay is fun. You mash the attack button and watch bad guys explode in blood and gore. You collect gold and jewels to buy upgrades. Easy. The problem with all of this, however, is that the game becomes kinda repetitive. I would play an area or two a sitting and then turn it off to remedy this, but the fact remains: there isn't much variety to the gameplay. The layout of the game was odd, too: rather than being a linear game, there's an overworld with selectable areas that the players navigate to enter areas. The problem with this is that it breaks the flow of gameplay, isn't always direct on where you need to go next, and that it creates some unnecessary backtracking.

The real problems with the game are the glitches and the poor writing. Enemies would walk across bottomless pits and through walls, said bottomless pits wouldn't be visible (I'd only know there were there when I fell what seemed to be a solid floor), and the hit detection was off quite a few times. None of these issues were game breaking, but were plenty annoying. And the writing...First and foremost, I'm an English major. It's my job to notice these things. That being said, I still think it needs to be known that for a game that bases itself so heavily on Conan the Barbarian (which started as a written story), ensuring that your text is well-written should be a priority. Split infinitives, switching back and forth between tenses, run on sentences, misspellings, and just poor writing held this game back for me. I could tell what the writers were aiming for, but it felt like they didn't care enough to proof their work. That's laziness.

So is IB worth buying? If you like OG-style action arcade games, sure. If you can accept the bad writing and the occasional glitch, sure. It's certainly not a bad game, but it's certainly not a great game. Try to find it on sale if you can.

This game was everything I wanted it to be: a frenetic symphony of blood, violence, bumpin' tunes, and super tight gameplay.

The minimalist approach to the story allows the player to focus on one thing: killing. With mile a minute gamplay and a simple control scheme, Hotline Miami allows its players to blast and force their way through its challenges at lightning speed; however, a large degree of stategy is needed for many of the challenges in the game. What comes out of this strange blend of thought and reflex is a highly chaotic, but highly rewarding gameplay experience.

The music is great. The controls are tight. The graphics, while simple, convey the violence in a surprsingly detailed manner. If you wanted to experience the 80's in a coke fueled rage, this is your chance. Enjoy.

Holy butts, this game is awesome!

I've been a fan of the AVGN since he started, and I've met him a handful of times. He's a really cool guy, so I try to support him in any way that I can. When I heard he had his own game, I jumped at the chance to get it.

Simply put, this game is a blast. It's a tough as nails action platformer that perfectly captures the spirit of older gen titles. Kickin' music? Yes. Tight controls? Yes. Colorful, varied stages each with their own theme and challenges? Yes. A play experience that makes me feel like I spent my money well? Yes.

If you remember playing games like Contra, Journey to Silius, Mega Man, and Super Turrican, this game is for you. It's a simple premise: shoot and jump your way through each stage, all while collecting power ups and dodging an insane amount of obstacles. That's it. And it works. It's the high level of difficulty that makes this game so good though: a very balanced difficulty system allows players of all skill levels to get what they want from this game.

Aside from the great gameplay, this is also a fantastic low-brow homage to the games of yesteryear. The incessant profanity made me laugh, too.

Buy this game. Expect a torrent of swear words and colorful metaphors to explode from your mouth, but it's a gratifying experience when you finally beat it.

Would The Master approve of this game?

Yes.

It looks and plays like a mid-80's NES game. It's not retro for the sake of being retro. If this was on a cart and I had an NES controller in my hand, I'd be right at home.

Basically, if you like old-school B movies, this is a fantastic homage to them. If you watched the MST3K episode with this, you'll dig it. If you don't even care about the movie and just want an OG style action platformer, you'd still dig it.

Totally worth the money, 100%.

The moment I saw the trailer for this game I knew I needed it. I didn't want it: I NEEDED it.

And boy, was I not let down.

Odallus is a fantastic homage to the great action adventure games of yesteryear, combining elements from Castlevania, Gargoyle's Quest, Astynax, and Metroid. It blends sword-swinging action with careful platforming exploration, all within a darkly grim fantasy world.

The graphics are gorgeous, the music (while subdued) fits the atmosphere perfectly, and the story is engaging enough to want to see to the end. And the gameplay, of course, provides more than enough challenge for those new to the genre and even for those who grew up with it (like myself.) It was just easy enough that I was able to progress at a moderate pace, but just difficult enough that I felt I got my money's worth.

If I have a gripe about the game, it's the dialogue: whether intentional or not, the erratic Engrish took me out of the experience at times. I hope it's something they fix in the future.

But if a few grammatical mistakes are the only complaints I have with the game, that's quite alright by me. I cannot stress enough how amazing this game is. Buy it.

What an absolute blast. This feels as if Taito and Sunsoft had gotten together and made a game that was a mix between Batman: Return of the Joker and Air Fortress. For anyone who doesn't get that, Jet Gunner feels and plays like a solid late 80's NES game.

What's refreshing to me was how the gameplay reminded me of a great Sunsoft title, but the bumpers between levels reminded me of a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ Electrobrain or Taxan game. In that regard, Jet Gunner feels genuinely NES and not just retro for retro's sake.

The video presents it to be a frenetic shooter, but it's actually much slower paced, and I like that. The core element of the gameplay, the jet pack, worked well and added nice platforming challenges. The weapon types were varied, and constantly changed throughout the game, even in the same stages if you had to replay an area over due to a death. This kept the game feeling fresh and active throughout.

For the price, this a steal. The presentation is solid and the gameplay offers about an hour worth of oldschool entertainment. Totally worth it.

If Robotron X decided to go on a coke-fueled banger, blasting KMFDM and Frontline Assembly, this is what it would look like.

What's the story? You can kill things. Why? Why not?

It's minimalist graphical style is balanced by its super-tight, super hectic gameplay. If you see a match through to completion, you've done a good job.

This is unforgiving, pure arcade shooting. And for the price, you can onlly imagine how many quarters you'd be saving if this was in an arcade.

I love this game.

For $1.50 I bought a game that is a giant mix of some of the best NES action titles. Vice: Project Doom, Shatterhand, Kabuki Quantum Fighter, even a little Contra: this game takes elements from all those great games and mixes them all into one title.

The graphics are colorful and well-detailed. The music is lively and catchy, adding well to the gameplay. The story is classic 80's action: a lone one-man army must battle his way through ninjas, robots, and mutants in order to save the world. The gameplay, the core component of a game like this, handles as well as it should have to. If you've ever played any of the games I previously mentioned then you'll know exactly what to expect: solid action platforming. The primary weapon is useful and the grenades handle well also. This cannot be stressed enough. Your primary means of attacking works well. The platforming, while rarely too difficult, livens up the stages and keeps them from becoming too linear. The airbike stages are nice breaks from the core gameplay and also handle well.

Upon completeing the game, you're awarded with an extra bonus mission that plays differently than the main game, a boss rush mode, and a Hardcore Mode. For anyone who wants extra replayability, this is awesome.

For the amount I paid for this, this was amazing. I'd pay more, if it wasn't on sale. Every cent well spent. If you like old-school action games, it's pretty hard to beat this.

Hot damn is this game great.

If the glory days of Toaplan and Cave are what you're after, this is as good as it gets.

If you're familiar with the genre, this is as solid as you can get a frenetic, dizzying bullet-hell title.

If you're not familiar with the genre, buckle down and get ready to learn how bad you are at shooters because this game doesn't joke.

This game is a steal.

It's a three to four hour RPG that lovingly pokes fun at the JRPG genre while still offering a solid dose of classic RPG goodness. And for, what, less than a dollar?

I've read that some people have a problem with the simplistic gameplay. It's a throwback to oldschool JRPG's: it's supposed to be an oldschool grindfest. The combo system was a nice change of pace, choosing level-up bonuses was fun, and while simple, the core gameplay worked.

Again, considering that I spent about $0.67 on this game, I was very impressed. I do understand that this was made for people like me, having grown up with the games this references and spoofs, but I still think newer gamers can find a good time with this game.

Yes. Buy this game. Be aware that it is oldschool in design, and as long as you know that, you'll be fine.

Oh, and pro tip: sit next to a white save circle and grind out battles until you clear dungeons worth of encounters. Boss fights will be a breeze.
