Early Access Review
If you like DND/tabletop RPGs, then this is an ABSOLUTE MUST!

What is TaleSpire?

TaleSpire is a mapmaker for tabletop RPGs (mostly DND but more will be added later) that allows players to play within the worlds created. It is seriously the best mapmaker out there. It could/should replace roll20. No mapmaker has captivated me like TaleSpire has (although Dungeon Alchemist will certainly be another good one). You create your entire world from the biggest mountains to the smallest towns. So what are the pros and cons?

Pros
  • Beautiful artstyle: It looks fantastic! I love everything about the minis and the world art. It really feels so fantasy

  • Excellent sound design: Sound for all occasions. Absolutely adore it. It fits the settings so well

  • The props: Plenty of setdressing to do with each and every map you make.

  • Ease of adding content: You can easily add custom content from sites like Tales Tavern or additions to your world by yourself while people are playing in it!

Cons
  • Not enough props: I love the props we have but I feel like we do not have enough (especially monsters) currently. Still, the props we do have are great. We need more themed props, though. This is a small team and it's early access, though, so it's okay.

  • Everyone has to pay $25 to use this program. There's no way to share it like Jackbox so everyone has to pony up the money. $25 is a very fair and quite undervalued price because TaleSpire is extremely excellent.

  • Theme: Currently, as of the posting of this review, the only real theme is fantasy (think DND). I know there is a Cyberpunk thing for later. It'd be great to have more themes like Wild West or Apocalyptic.

Conclusion

If you in any way are trying to move from roll20 or just play in your DND maps with friends, then you owe it to yourself to get this game. No longer do you have to pay $200 for Dwarf Fortress tiles, no longer do you have to play on flat maps; you can play in fully fledged maps with your friends. Do bear in mind it's not like the pieces are animated, but that's not even a con to me. If you want to play with your friends in fully fledged worlds, THIS is the software to get.
