Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is not your typical Metal Gear game so don't expect the same tactical espionage action that other Metal Gear titles provide.
While the game is titled Metal Gear, it's a spin-off game and not directly connected to the main game series.

Minor Spoilers Warning)

GENRE
As opposed to other Metal Gear games, Rising was developed by Platinum Games and not Hideo Kojima which is obvious from the second you play the game. The usual stealth gameplay is exchanged in favour of a face-paced hack-and-slash. Maybe not the genre that you would associate with Metal Gear, but definitely would with Platinum Games. The hack-and-slash gameplay is solid, enjoyable and well executed. The controls feel crisp and responsive and the fighting system is really enjoyable. You can still take the stealth approach as in other Metal Gear games but it's not nearly as in-depth and feels lackluster compared to fighting the enemies.

STORY
The game is set after the events of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. While no knowledge of the series or prior games is recquired to play the game and enjoy the story there are some references to them that you might miss but nothing major. You play as Raiden, a Cyborg Ninja, working for a PMC (Private Military Company) Maverick Security Consulting. While providing security for a developing country Raiden stumbles upon another cyborg and is defeated by another cyborg ninja. The trail leads him to another PMC, Desperado Enforcement. Raiden decides to uncover the secrets behind Maverick and take Justice into his own hands.

The story is over-the-top as you would become to expect from other Metal Gear games. However, the story does have the usual Metal Gear feeling as the selling point of the game is the combat system and not the story.
As usual for any Metal Gear game there are lots of long cinematic cutscenes that you get to enjoy during the story.
Codec calls also return and most of the story and additional information is told through them. The majority of Codec calls is optional so the player has the option to learn additional information of completely ingnore them.

OTHER
RULES OF NATURE!! The Game features an amazing Soundtrack. Every Boss comes with it's own theme and it really sets the tone for the fight and makes every Boss memorable.
Another thing I want to point out is the difficulty. It's a Platinum Games game, it's difficult. The player is challenged but it never feels unjust. Just beware of the final Boss, you might need some FPS tweaking to stand a chance. There are guides of the Steam Forums about it.

VERDICT
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is only a Metal Gear Game in title. It's a spin-off and it should be viewed as such.
While the game isn't too well received among Metal Gear fans it's an amazing hack-and-slash game.
If you're searching for a Metal Gear Game on PC, you should turn to MGS V, but if you're looking for a well designed action-paced hack-and-slash game MGR:R is well worth it's price.
