A video game called “Subnautica” immerses the player into a world completely filled by water
and forces the player to swim down and scavenge for materials to escape the planet. By
venturing out, the player encounters some not so friendly creatures that leave a sense of dread for
future endeavors. The player oftentimes is put in a situation where they are surrounded by water
and nothing but water, wondering what is below them, what is above them, where a monster
could be. This fear of the open water is often referred to as thalassophobia. However, this is just
a video game, the player is not truly in this water world and is simply sitting in front of the
screen, watching this transpire. This does not stop the player from feeling the sense of dread
throughout the entire game. That is why this is norm-discordant alief(Subconsciously feeling
opposite to how you should feel), because the player is in a place that is safe to them however
feels as terrified as if they were in the video game. The player knows that they are in the safety
of their own home, however they have an alief that they are not safe.
