Solid game. I have played more on someone else's computer than what actually shows up for mine. The research system is interesting, and rewards you for not using explosive weapons, as does the engineering. This makes the game more challenging, as explosives will like 99% of the time, assuming no user error, be able to kill most enemies, especially when combined together.

The game on its base level is pretty difficult, though not impossible. It requires good decision making, rapid decision making, and knowing when to sacrifice people's lives in order to accomplish a mission, and when to sacrifice the mission instead. You can get this game on sale pretty often, with all of the dlc bundled in. I can also recommend the dlc, as they are well made, and add additional variety, and options to the gameplay formula.

In the base game you can be expected to face a rapidly escalating battle, especially on your first playthrough, with enemies popping up in different places, and forcing you to change your strategy. You will take losses, and the hardest part is managing who to put at risk, and who not to. There is also a decent character editor available for the game, however I wouldn't suggest you put too much time in to designing the individual characters, unless you have one or two that you will particularly prioritize above all others. I designed a simple uniform of the skul helmet, armor 3, black camo, and it seemed to work fine for the grunts. Playing smartly, without putting units at undue risk, I lost three people in less than ten missions.

RNG will kick your ass occasionally, and that is generally the leading cause of my characters dying. But, it also spices things up a bit. When you get a Rookie that gets quite a few lucky shots in, they will begin to snowball, as they begin to level up they will become stronger and stronger, and you should prioritize gearing them up so they can continue becoming stronger. Don't put all of your eggs into one basket, it is possible for an entire squad to be ahnialated, especially if you are playing on the harder difficulties.

The game has solid graphics, a good eery vibe, and sets the tone for a survival story against invading aliens very well. You will build up an ant-farm like base, while managing new recruits, resources, research, and which troops to deploy, and how to outfit them. Combat plays out in a turn-based scenario, where all of your units go, and then all of their's. If you aren't in cover you are dead. If you are in cover and RNGesus decides its your time, you are also dead. As I said earlier, explosives will deny you some of the much needed resources, and I really don't bother with them unless its a life or death situation. If you are about to lose a soldier, it's generally better to take out the enemy with a grenade or rocket, rather than risk losing said soldier.

The game plays well on my ♥♥♥♥♥♥ old computer, and equally well (remember I played it on someone else's high endish computer) on high graphics, as well as low. You will notice some framerate issues if your computer is as ♥♥♥♥♥♥ as mine (can you run it said I can't play it, obviously untrue). The cutscenes are well made, and upgrading technology feels like an important step in securing humanity's future.

For first time players I suggest Ironman Impossible, as just ask anyone on YouTube, it's the easiest setting for the game. If you are wondering which game to buy, Xcom or Xcom 2, I would suggest both if possible, and if only one I would say get Xcom 2. Xcom 2 won't require you to have played #1 to understand, has a better character customization system, and overall has improvements throughout the board.

I would suggest this game for anyone that likes or is the following:

Hardcore Strategy Player
SciFi lover
Alien Killer
Platform Player, like Mario, Underfail, or Sonic, cuz lets be honest you need to play a real game for once :O
Masochist, because boy will there be pain
And finally, if you like games such as Fire Emblem on the handhelds, this game is quite similar to them, at least the older ones where perma death happens, not the newer ones where we wimp out instead.

The developers have added a lot of content since when I first bought it, which was awhile ago. As a player of RTS style games for many years now, I can safely say this is one of the greatest indie RTS games I have played. In fact it is a solid RTS, for the price, and I haven't really seen anything that was comparable.

It features:
Progressive Gameplay; I.e. upgrade talent tree that is outside of the actual battles. You gain loot and such, then spend it to gain benefits, such as a knight, or spearman, buildings, etc.

Common RTS elements and uncommon RTS elements, all that are good. Base building, troops, management of resources. Uncommon includes choosing to grow chickens vs pigs, to send a cart or not, where to build a farm, how to use the resources. Do I use the wood for this or that, what do I use the stone for, the gold for, do I use food for peasants or soldiers?

Each match (this was awhile ago, sorry if review is outdated), plays out with a strong tactical gameplay set AND elements normally limited to turn based games. The maps are fair sized, and there are plenty of objects to go for. Want more gold, get a cart, some peasants, and send them out to mine. You may need to station soldiers nearby to protect them from enemies, including the undead.

Speaking of the fallen, things that die have a tendency to, well, come back to kill you. If things are left unlooted, which must be done by peasants, they will come back and be an annoyance. At first this seems trivial, but can be abused to cause injury to your foes. Raid the neutral camp near your enemy's base early into the game with a medium sized force. This way if your troops succeed, a large dead force will strike at their peasants and fort, and if not hopefully many die, and the same result may happen to your foe.

Neutral camps, the enemies vary, usually protect resources that you need in order to survive and expand, and are worth looking into.

The game is somewhat complex, and has bugs, but is definitely worth the investment.

The game is fun, but for $10 more I'd say get Warband, its essentially a remastered version of the game.

I took a shot as the man who took out my entire team rode towards me, I missed him but hit his horse instead, I immediately began to reload and watched in anticipated terror as my reload took 8 seconds and he started to rise and charge at me, so confident was he that he did not draw his pistol, he was almost upon me as I shouldered my barrel and filled him with lead. A trained professional I took his sword, crouched in cover and immediately reloaded and then I set out to fulfill my mission-retribution for all of my friends.
10/10 would miss every time I aim and hit when I don't.

With the massive amount of customizations options in the base game, you are able to create epic strategies, even for the same faction and race as the previous times. With my favorite being the elf, I enjoyed making a Necromancer Elf, Frostling Necromancer, etc. You can construct armies that create other armies, for example, I research deathbringers, which are a faction specific unit, and then build them. I put 5 of them, and my leader. And then I run around slaughtering weaker armies, and manually fighting the battles. Every battle my army(ies) swell in number, with every victory my deathbringers inflict the ghoul curse, which varies on chance of working based on the unit. The curse can be broken, but it is rare, once inflicted when the unit dies, it becomes a ghoul of that same unit, and joins your side. I then proceed to suicide those weaker armies up against cities, and then swoop in with the deathbringer main army to wipe out the resistance that is left, and continue to spread the plague of undeath...

Not one but TWO DLC before the Early Access game is out? What the ♥♥♥♥.

"But but but the second DLC releases in October"

Yes, which means that they've been working on it since well before now, and the game just 'released', which means that a lot of our funding did not go where we wanted it.

Game also costs more than twice as much when I bought it, and actually runs worse?

The game is very fun, and accessible from the start. There are no fees to get up and start playing. The game is not pay to win, but those who pay will find a much more accessible game, even better than normal. You will gain xp at a faster rate, and once a month at double the normal rate, certs, which are used to purchase upgrades (real money can't be used for this, hence the f2p and not b2w model), but are gained per 250xp earned (and a few other methods), and as you guessed are increased by being a paid member of the game. The graphics are great, the gameplay is great. I personally will continue to play and support this game, however, I will not be playing it all day, or even every day, as it is not that kind of game for me. I recommend that you try it out, even if you never spend any money in the game you can unlock all items, upgrades, and vehicles as time progresses. 8/10

Update:
This game has one of the most functional F2P models I have ever seen, if you are wondering I have such little time played, that is because I use the actual independent launcher most of the time, rather than logging on to steam. There are no features, minus cosmetic, that are behind a paywall. You can experience anything and everything, without paying a dime. New players shouldn't immediately change their weapons, and such, as these weapons really are well balanced, and arguably some of the easiest and most effective to use, most of the time. The reason why you are able to cut the time down and get a membership (it only affects leveling, which after the first 15 levels doesn't mean anything), you get some free points per month, don't have to wait 0-5minutes to get onto a continent that is about to end, and not much more, other than sales (use these with the points granted to save a lot).
The game itself supports many different playstyles, and is changing often. Personally I am a cosmetic ♥♥♥♥♥, so my wallet is crying, but again, none of it is needed. I have friends who have literally played since day 1, on the same character, and don't have ANY cosmetics. The reason why it takes so long to unlock things is because they want to keep you interested in the game for the longhaul. Same tactic with CoD.
This game is one of the most beautiful, most enjoyable, and also most frustrating of games I've played. Frustration is important, because if it is only fun, than there is no challenge to it. At times flying seems pointless, as you'll be MOWED down by people who think they are the Red Baron or something, and it was a hard mindset to get out of. I eventually realize that it is like anything, a good player is one who has put a lot of time to learn the mechanics.
To some, that is a bad thing, but for those of us that want to be able to sit down and play a game without worrying about having something to do, there is always something to do. If I want to fight in a massive infantry zerg, I do it. If I want to play like Ironman with a Minigun and no jets, I do it. If I want to coordinate a massive aerial invasion, I can do that too. Ultimately, the game allows you to do what you want, within your abilities. Teamwork is key, that is true, however if you don't want to work with a team, or only want to work with a few people (friends/family/etc) you can. Personally, when I grow bored of teamplay, I take a cloaked flash (ATV), behind enemy lines, and just snipe the poor fools while they are facing my team, this way, even if I don't WANT to work with my team, and deal with the various crazy people, I can still be an asset.
Revised: 9/10

The most fun I've ever had, was playing 'Sniper' in the hils of Indar, in the middle of the night, with me and this other guy attempting to kill the other. That is until he made a massive tactical mistake, he had no cover to hide behind when his cloak went out, so he was visible long enough for me to uncloak and take the shot.
Revised: 9.5/10

Another good part of fun is to fly a Galaxy full of stalker cloaked infantry high into the sky, and have it drop them, and stealth as they go down, and then play peekaboo with the enemies. (Stalker cloaks don't run out of time if you are stationary, and are EXTREMELY hard to spot)
Revised: 10/10

Jumped on a sending pad as a light assault, saw an enemy galaxy at half health when I was passing through, it was under me, hit jet, managed to drop on it, they were stationary for a second, and replayed the scene from the Official Trailer of Planetside 2, and from that scene in Avatar (where Jake blows up the big gunship).

I have played this game, and the original, for quite a few hours at this point, and I can say that I am definitely pleased. The combat is a little odd, when you first start out, until you start thinking of it as more of a simulation rather than an action game style of fighting. The rpg character creation is ahead of it's time, while the backstory you give your character is important, as the choices determine what things you get for free at the start, starting attributes and skills, and more importantly how you are viewed by the other people. Your actions also determine this, sacrifice your troops to retreat rather than die, and you are viewed as a coward, and some lords will lessen their liking of you. You can raid caravans, pillage villages, conquer castles, take over cities, start a business, become a trader, become a vassal to a mighty king, or even become a king yourself. The troops you take along for your journeys upgrade into better units, you stop using those recruits as instead they are becoming footman, and calvarly, knights even. Or on the other spectrum, archers and crossbow, or archers on horses. As a male you can pursue a courtship with a lady, doing so will grant you benefits, but beware the dowry is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ crazy, not to mention you don't have that long to raise it. Some ladies and their fathers/brothers will not appreciate your advances, and will inform you of such. You can command your troops in real time combat, with a rather smart command system. Setting up units in certain ways will help a lot, for example putting your archers on top of the hill, and your infantry 20 ft in front of them, going down the hill, your opponents have a harder time charging up hill, and your archers will slay them, or at least inflict terrible casualties. There also tournaments, whenever you feel that you have the combat down, and there is a tournament in town, I recommend participating. If you place a bet of 100denaris, before every round on yourself, and if by the sixth and final round you have put down 600 (100 every time), and you win, you will get about 4100 denaris, which is a substantial sum, especially considering no time in the regular world has passed. Tournaments are a good way to get into a feast at the start, where you can meet important lords and perhaps the king himself, and begin your relationship and journey to the dark side -erhm- to war I mean. More importantly, you may begin courting at these parties. However, the game is extremely sexist, its realistic for the time. Want to play a female? Its like turning the difficulty onto the hardest possible, nobody wants to see a female in command nor on the field, its hard. Overall, this game is an incredible amount of fun, and I would recommend picking it up. 10/10

I love this game, it is quite a bit of fun. Check out my profile pictures if you want to see something from Mass Effect, buwahhahahahah. Besides that, there is quite a bit to do. I personally prefer to conquer all, and on some of the bigger maps that can take days, real days, perhaps longer if the AI is turned up more. It took me about 6 hours of constant war to win one of the bigger maps, and I shutter to think of what Insane would be like, shudder in terror, I might never see the end of that match. If you want to see the Reapers, look at my pictures, you can custom create your ships, and of course empire. I went as a synthetic empire, with the bonuses made for how I wanted to play, which of course was to cleanse the vermin from the galaxy. I recommend this game, it is worth it. If you have played Civ V, or Sword of the Stars 2, then you will love it.

EDIT:
After playing for quite a bit more, I learned some of the flaws, and more of the benefits of the game. Obviously, as has been said by many, the AI is a little silly, that 11th place in power, out of 11, minor race will attempt to threaten you, despite you being the strongest power in the game. However, the game has many strong points, and the customizability of the game is a strong one on its own. Never fear, the Game Developers will fix the issues.

EDIT 2:
The game is still very enjoyable, and I would recommend it to anyone that loves strategy games, and especially those that liked the spore style of gameplay, where you get to customize your characters and send them forth. The ship customization takes a bit of getting used to, but as I have said before you are able to create whatever your dreams lead you to. The way points are invested, and the fact that you can quickly and easily upgrade and change, or even create new paths for current ships, and more importantly their designs. Using my reapers as the example, some were made for long range, while others were much, much stronger, but had a shorter range. I was able to create ships that would ferry troops to invade worlds, and being a cybernetic race, could easily replicate my populace at every new planet and continue the invasion. As time goes on, and your research continues to develop, your weapons and ships can become stronger. Since all of my ships would be consumed after invading a planet (one ship per planet), this may seem like a downside. However, with the extremely high cost of upgrading ships, I determined that it was cheaper and more efficient to instead just reproduce a new ship altogether. The fact that they were being consumed meant that I could send out my "reaper mk. 1"s, which would wipe out a weak faction, and then be destroyed in the end as a result of taking over all of the planets, and then I could upgrade for free and produce "reaper mk. 2"s, and since all my research regarding ships inevitably led to me reducing mass, or increase ability to hold more mass, I could put way more things on my ships. There are some flaws to the game, however I believe, EVEN IF they are never fixed, none of them are significant enough to detract from this game's value. I do say, this game is not to be played 24/7 and for you to expect to never get bored, however I will state that the game is definitely worth the cost, and I have not regretted spending a single dime on the game. I do recommend that you spend time on the game, create your own factions, upload your own images. (I created both the Geth, and the Reapers in game, and set them to destroy eachother)

My review is still a 9.5/10

Great game, offers tons of replayability, more so than most strategy games I have seen in recent years.

Offers a fair amount of customization for your leader, beyond just abilities, you can customize their looks as well. There are quite a few races, each one has their unique advantages and disadvantages. Classes add to this, offering unique units, abilities, and other things on top of that.

There is an above ground, and an underground, each with different traits. Terrain also plays a role in this, there are multiple types of terrain, which can be good or bad depending on which race you are and where you are. There are spells that are available, which will offer you the ability to largely shape the world's terrain around you. A good example is the ability to take the air element upgrade(s) on your leader, and using one of the powers there, which will allow you to slowly turn all the world around your capital to ice. Since the majority of people hate Ice, you can use this as an advantage to make their army slightly weaker, and their populaces unhappy. For each spell you use, there is a way to 'disjunct' it, using their own magical power, and likewise you can also reinforce it.

In a more unique aspect, there is tactical combat, meaning you have turns, but your units have distinct abilities that occur when they are fighting that makes them truly better or lesser than others. There is a shocking variety present in the game, and for every unit or strategy there is a counter. Personally I bought all the DLC within about 5 hours of playing, having recognized that this game was one of the games I was looking for, and immediately took a liking to the necromancer. Using hordes of undead, I surrounded an opponent from all sides, and to remove the amount of damage they can deal, I flank them with my weakest units from every side, you have to use your attacks in a certain way, always striking the back, unless you want your units to die a horrible death. Both strategy and tactics are present in this game, onto my next example.

Wizards/Witches feel powerful in this game, in fact they have an entire class dedicated to it. However, do remember that anyone can use spells, it's just the class dedicated for it has better advantages, including the ability to summon units and whatnot. When your magic user (especially the magic-using leader you selected) become powerful enough, they are quite capable of wiping out entire armies with ease. Utilizing lightning strikes, regenerating walls, an electric fence, and the ability to summon hordes of units is paramount to victory with them, meaning that you also need to smartly manage your use of the resources you have at your disposal.

Every class really does have their own unique look on gameplay, with certain class/race cominations greatly changing how the game would otherwise be played.

There is a lot to this game, too much for me to try and explain, I would definitely recommend it.
