Early Access Review
After the 1.0 release, the game still has some bugs for others, but admittedly for me it wasn't. So now I'm reviewing the game entirely on its merits.

The core gameplay loop is great. It's a nice level of management, even though on the harder level I still never felt the risk of death by starvation or something. I just had to be a tad more careful with time management. The artstyle is lovely too, and just the foundation overall is and has always been lovely.

That being said, the narrative is permeated by this sort of bizarre writing vibe where I'm not quite sure if it's meant to be taken seriously or not. I sure hope not, because if so it's just too full of unlikable characters. Every single character bar a couple gag characters, Vlad and the love interest girl is written with this sorta venom behind their smile that just makes me dislike them. It feels mismatched with the aesthetic imo, and very much unpleasant to me. That being said, it feels intentional, it feels well executed, I just don't like it on account of my tastes. I'd like it if arthur called them gits, at least behind their backs.

Lastly, progression in the story mode is weird. I very much feel like the sandbox mode's where you'll find the most enjoyment. All in all, a very mixed experience. It delivers on what I expect of it, so I'm not precisely disappointed, but it also has aspects I'm not too keen on. I'd give it the maligned, fence-sitting "mixed" rating if I could, but since I can't and I can't say I haven't enjoyed zoning out to this game for the afternoon it took me to beat the story mode either, I'm turning this frown upside down. You did god, devs. Hope you'll be doing even better going forward.

Give me something to spend my piles of cash on, even if it's just valheim-style decorative money piles for the love of god!

Okay, that outta the way, I feel like the direction this game went isn't really compatible with what it built itself on. Sure, probably way back when you'd still need to do most everything manually the process of (mostly) moving things one by one and making yourself a nice, square house next to your hole would have been deeply satisfying. But as it is currently, I believe the idea is to incentivize us as players to build, and all that jazz, but building is kinda tedious. There's a point while playing where I just switched from risking losing sleep over this game for how engaged I was to just hopping on to tinker for a bit before moving on with my day and that's not of my own free will. I just can't get as invested currently, because outside of finding the things in each dig site there's nothing to do, and I have enough money to just throw tnt at the problem until it goes away. Anything I would do would be for its own sake, but that's not what I want to play it for. I want to have a drive, to have the next thing.

So yeah, economy REALLY needs a rebalancing because once you automate production it's kinda ♥♥♥♥♥♥. I'll still recommend this game, because the 50 hours of figuring it out and the work to get to where I am was fun, and I'm certain once the dev "discovers" (this choice of word will never not be funny to me in this context) a physics engine that allows proper co-op it will be a thoroughly enjoyable deal, Kudos on the multi-monitor splitscreen though. Good idea.

Really ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ good. Solid design, if sometimes a tad cheeky or somewhat inelegant. Story is amazing. My first playthrough ate up an entire day, and then further completing it ate up my morning the next day. I liked it so much I bought it for myself the day after that and I plan to do another playthrough. The audio-visuall aspects are also hitting a nostalgic spot I never thought I had.

Small tip: don't be ashamed of changing between control schemes to deal with the challenges you have ahead of you.

Worship. Submit.

I feel like many of us needed to hear what this game has to say.

What one would call a "true rogue-like experience". The only thing improving between runs is your knowledge and skill. Also it has timing mechanics so you don't jsut stay for ages in a single spot as well as random instant-death traps which will often feel unfair (and admittedly can be really unfair) but it's all part of the *grits teeth* fun. But for real, it's enjoyable and the devs seem pretty fun. Grab it on a discount if you're not fully convinced.

I guess someone wanted to make a crafting sim that had more of a scientific approach, having the player consider properties added that would give the desired reaction. Naturally some effects may be a bit of moon logic (charm comes to mind particularly) where some hint on what train of thought to take would be useful. Otherwise it's a success. Just...make the daily grind more engaging somehow. It's not good when I just skip to the end of conversation to see what they want. Maybe add some customers where you can add optional effects that will increase the price? And you can only figure them out by paying attention to text?

Regardless it's charming, on the cheap and recommended.

Buy it on sale.

It's a fun adventure (yes, really) compared to the nuts to butts grit of RE7 and the palms sweating tension of RE2make. On the highest difficulty it's a mechanical challenge where you really need to ration your stuff, highly recommended if you're actually insane. But it's not a sequel for the horror and lowkey scroungy survivalism of 7 nor is it a replacement for 2's arcady fun. Like I opened this review up, it's a seriously fun adventure and genuinely feels rather like a weirdly grim swashbuckling story.

I mean, it makes sense, since after tracing the story of SH2 they went and traced SH1 and that one too has this strangely adventurous undertone to it. This one's just...more about the dumb fun. And that's perfectly fine, for an adequate price (which 60 euros really isn't).

It has been nearly two weeks since I've played through this game. This 6 hour little ditty still lives in my brain. Definitely recommended.
