Ok so yes, this is definitely a walking simulator, but if you like the thought of careful investigation and piecing a developing story together as you go, then this is worth the time spent.

I was on the slow side of things and it took me an hour, so its a pretty short experience but the atmosphere is built up nicely. And if you get stuck at the crow, look down.

I was skeptical. Then I played. I love it. Its been a long time since any game I've played has actually had some deep character building to it with a wide variety of potential builds based on both a passive skill tree (that is immense in size) and a skill system based around skill gems and supporting gems that can link together to create new effects. Want to summon zombies? Want those zombies to summon phantoms? you can do that.

Don't be intimidated by everyone saying how hard the game is. Early game really isn't that threatening and you have plenty of time to figure out your class before things really start getting harder. Until then you get to experiment and find what play style works for you. Sure you'll eventually look up some builds at some point, but don't be afraid to experiment as well.

Its amazing how so many updates can do absolutely nothing for this game. If you heard there was nothing to do when the game first launched... well here we are several updates later with several content patches and still nothing to actually do.

Played a few hours so far. Enjoyed. Might get the rogue and elves DLC. Wasn't convinced at first until the 20 dollar game went on sale and then I got a 5 dollar coupon from the summer sale. Best 2.99 game I've ever bought.

OK, I have to hand it to the developers, they're helpful and quick to respond if you create a discussion instead of replying to an old one.

There are a lot of interesting wallpapers available. I would recommend this to anyone and, if you are patient, the bugs will be minor so long as you ask the developers for some help. It is early access, after all.
Old Review

EDIT: For those who use SpecialK (especially for Nier Automata) it will break Wallpaper Engine. I'll add the fix for this below the strike text.

The software worked great for the first two days.

Now I can't change or add any new wallpapers because the actual program will not open.
If I open it using the 64-bit option, I get an empty white window and the sound of an error.
If I open it using either of the 32-bit options, I get 100's of empty white windows and the sounds of many errors forcing me to restart my computer before it crashes.

Sure I can launch the program and have the one wallpaper be there, but I can't change it anymore.

My recomendation is that you save your four bucks. Plenty of people are having all kinds of bugs aside from this one ranging from wallpapers failing to display, to straight software crashes, to animated wallpaper stutters. I will not recommend this until it is fixed.


If you had/have the above problem: all you need to do is go into the directory with the .exe, create a blank .txt file and rename it to SpecialK.Deny.(name of .exe). Since I run the 64-bit, mine was SpecialK.Deny.wallpaper64.exe

keep in mind that this fix only works for those of you who use the SpecialK mod.

EDIT: Steam doesn't have a 'neutral' recommendation. I want to stress this: keep an open mind and read through some other reviews before deciding.

I know this is early access, but I can't really recommend it in its current state. Top is cons, bottom is pros
I haven't had any crashes, or bugs, but there are some glaring issues in design. Do not let my review deter you, I strongly believe you should read through several before deciding.

Cons
1. effects cannot be applied to single layers within groups. If you place an effect, it affects everything. EDIT: You can change this by making a new preset for each new layer. For example, if one group is using a preset called *orange lighting,* then any time you edit *orange lighting* it will affect that group of layers. If you select a new layer and make a new preset, it will affect that new group or single layer only (depending on whether you selected a group or a single layer respectively). I still find it a tad disorganized. I feel like the list of effects should be its own 'section' for each layer instead of having them all mixed in.
2. Placing objects locks to the grid. You can't free place anything unless you use the object brush EDIT: I have been informed that there is a way to change this option, but I have yet to find it. I'll keep looking for it.
3. Save locations do not exist and the program only remembers where the last 'thing' was saved. For instance, if you save the whole project under a self-made directory, if you want to save an effect preset, it will show up under that same directory, so you need to switch back and forth constantly.
4. When you press Ctrl+Z to attempt to undo an effect, it will undo EVERYTHING up to the point that you last touched a layer. So if you fixed all of it the way you like it but made a minor mistake at the end, all the effects are gone and the last object you placed/moved will be removed/moved back respectively. On top of that, the camera moves to the last position it was at when you moved that object which can be really jarring.
5. the elipse ground placement will snap to the grid (which is fine) and so will the rounded wall placement (which is fine). What isn't fine is that they do not line up when trying to place the wall around the rim of the ground. My work around is to place the wall piece-wise as best you can then to take the ground brush and cover the missing spots.


Lets look at some positives, though:
pros

1. The effects are really nice (which is why I want to use them. really adds depth).
2. if you use the objects creatively, they can act as stand-ins for things that aren't part of the original objects. Like I use the bath scaled down as a bucket of water.
3. object grouping works fine, so you don't have to sift through hundreds of layers if you organize them appropriately. (although having layers work differently would be nice. As it is, every object is a new layer. It would be fantastic if a layer acted as an empty group and all objects and ground placed while it is selected would fall under that group heading.)

This has a lot of potential and it is still being developed. It has plenty of use and I can honestly say it is fun to use, but there are issues that I cannot look past.

The game was a lot of fun. While I never took the time to explore, the world is very detailed. The story is interesting and pretty dramatic at times, but it always felt realistic (like, nothing seemed like it was impossible). The voice acting felt very natural. The framerate was 100% smooth (even on max settings). The world makes you feel isolated which was the point from the start. While the game doesn't offer much replay value, I, personally, would recommend it to anyone who likes a story-driven game.

For the price, this is a great game. Short, sweet, and relaxing.

If you have ever played spore, this is essentially a beefed up version of the cell stage (which was my favorite part of spore).

It has a nice sound track, and the graphics are pretty good.

provides some tough challenges here and there.

I will say that the final 'boss' wasn't really challenging since you don't actually take any damage or die, and the game could use replayable missions for faster leveling endgame (I use that word loosely). Getting to max level is mostly for the achievement for the completionist in you.

The stats are a bit confusing. Things like attack and defense don't seem to do anything. I dont know, maybe defense prevents pushback... either way, it seems like it was meant for more, but it just didn't happen.

I do recommend the game, but don't expect more hours of gameplay than I had.

don't start playing this. For if you do... You won't stop...

I logged 10 hours of this yesterday split between the website and the steam version. Files can transfer, so there is no problem there. It is very addicting. I don't even know how it happened. I just started clicking... and I didn't stop.

My damage reached the billions, then the trillions... and it all started at 1... PTSD bro... PTSD...

There was quite a bit that I found fantastic in this game, and other things that really bothered me. (opinion based)

Pros: Fantastic customization. You get to make the hero you want with few limitations. Gameplay is action oriented. No auto attack or click and hold to attack. Moves revolve around skills and combos. The game is fully explorable. Almost open world (with the exceptions of changing cities, going in buildings, and doing dungeons). You can have a hideout, but that seems to be more for those willing to spend money (furnishings, better locations). I never talked much, but, from what I could tell (back when I still played) the community was very active. Questing: It does have your filler quests to lengthen the game and provide quest gear, but the story quests are fun, and bosses can be difficult (because why have a game if it is too easy?).

Cons: As an MMO, I expect this, but it still bugs me: Gear is a thing. I can't say for pvp, but gear can make or break a character. Gotta gear up. I get bored of Warcraft because of two things: Not action based, and engame is a gear grind. Questing: When a city gets attacked, you expect just that area to be under attack. Here, everywhere is being attacked all the time (quest zones). I understand the reasoning behind this, but it would be nice to see the area at peace when you and your comrads save the day. Warcraft uses phasing to do this. Great mechanic. Very immersive. The programmers here probably can't use their system for that. Maybe they don't know how. Maybe they don't want to. Whatever the case, it is a con in my book. The faction headquarters can be confusing for new players. If I remember, I wandered around a while before finally getting oriented...

Honestly, I reccommend this game to anyone who doesn't mind (or enjoy's) gear grinding, and to those who feel a city in constant chaos is the perfect way to relieve stress. Personally, I couldn't get past it, but I still enjoyed the game while I did play.
