The Iron Cross was established by King Friedrich Wilhelm III of Prussia and first awarded on 10 March 1813 to soldiers during the Wars of Liberation against Napoleon.
This is my Grandfathers Iron Cross awarded to him for service to Emperor Wilhelm II of Germany during WW I. His mother Maria Muller was originally from East Prussia, it's interesting to wonder if a long lost reative actually fought on the battlefield against Napoleon's army?
