This was a letdown when compared to the first F.E.A.R. On the surface it plays like the first of the series, with improved visuals. This veneer cracks after a few shootouts. The impressive enemy AI has been replaced with quantity. Had the enemy been a little more clever rather than numerous, it would be wasted on F.E.A.R. 2 because the somewhat multiple-approach level design of the original is gone, leaving you with only one narrow path to take with shootouts.
The "spookiness" is done with the exact same effects as the first game, so its efficacy is reduced. Overall the game felt like an incredibly bland shooter that looks like every other forgettable shooter made in the past five years.

Despite this game being almost 9 years old, all the tenants that made it a great game back then still hold up now. The graphics, although not as flashy or deep as modern standards, are still pleasing to the eye. The environments are textured rather sparsely and in generic forms like warehouse, office, or lab, yet they all look sharp in 1080 and max AA.
The game's AI which was lauded in 2005 is still impressive; better than many games since. They will not stand still and wait to get shot, neither will the "wait by the door and shoot them as they come in" work in F.E.A.R.
The story though was not taking any effect on me because I did not want to wait around answering machines to hear voice messages that comprise the story. Aside from that, it was a blast to go through the campaign, moving from one slo-mo shootout to the next.

This is the strongest Steam recommendation I can make. This game is so amazing in every aspect. It's an amazing satire of video games in the form of an amazing game. It brings to you at the easiest convenience all the things I most enjoyed in a open-world sandbox game, most of which within an hour or so of playing. Is it like $9.99 without any sales? If so, it's so worth the money. If it's on sale, Jeezus Christ that's a sweet deal.

I am very conflicted about it, but I would recommend this damn game. It has amazing graphics; with exquisite character models that demonstrate visible damage and living, breathing backgrounds. The combat is not smooth enough for my taste, just like the Mortal Kombat's before it. It is much more dependent on direction changing special moves and several types of projectiles rather than close-up punches or kicks.
It's had fro me to recommend this game because although the game is satisfying and well crafted, its single-player portion is frustratingly difficult and the multi-player portion is slow and/or unresponsive, which leaves you with mostly the single-player. This complaint is probably just my own difficulties with the Mortal Kombat style of combat. I aint no good at it but I do love watching it when it comes together.

The hype about the game's story almost broke the game for me. I had heard this was an "average at best" game wrapped around an amazing story. It just about is, but it's slow to get to the meaty parts of the plot.
A few minutes into the game I got even more excited about how the story would develop simply by the fact that the antagonist is named "Konrad" which I took to be a foreshadowing for a Heart of Darkness remake in video game form. This hype was met with hours of killings hundreds of enemies in a hide behind cover shootign gallery and on-screen text, that can't be removed, telling you what to do and what objective was recently met. These kept me squarely in the context of a cartoonishly violent video game that made it seem laughable in the cut-scenes when matters of life and death were pondered.
Despite the misgivings of this somewhat thought provoking game being mired down with the requirements of a modern video game, I recommmend it. Sure, the game isn't as gripping as Conrad's novel or Apocalypse Now, but it's a pretty damng good display of "the horror".

It's a fine game. It's certainly pretty as hell. Just as pretty as the first and the third. Along with the graphical beauty, it's an excellently paced but utterly orthodox "hide behind cover while your shield recharges" shooter set within narrow corridors and occasional open areas.
What brings me to not be able to recommend it is the checkpoint save system. This is the PC version, so I was hoping it would have a save whenever feature. Not only does it not have that, but huge gaps in between checkpoints. So many times I have fought tough battles and barely surviving, then falling off a cliff afterwards and then then having to redo the tough battle. This one facet was so frustrating that it brings me not being able to recommend it.

This game is one of the closest examples of video game perfection that I've experienced. The only flaws you'll find in this game only become apparent after you've found yourself playing it for several hours in a row because it's so damn good you can't put it down. It's the only game that made me want to play through more than twice or try to 100% complete.

What are you doing still reading this? Buy this game. It's one of the most unique ventures into video games. It's fun. It's very addicting. It'll play with your mind.

By itself this game is wonderful. If you've played Arkham City though, there is no going back. Arkham City improves on every aspect of Arkham Asylum. Especially the fighting. The range of the beat-em-up combat which once felt flawless in Arkham Asylum now feels constrained after exploring all the combat options Arkham City brought forth.
So if you haven't played any of the Batman: Arkham games, start with this one because once you've played Arkham City, you can't go back. By itself, it's one hell of a game with a hell of a story and one of the most enveloping first five minutes of a video game.

It pains me to say it, but I wouldn't recommend this game. I would however recommend the first CoH. The sequel is at best a sideways step from the original, and at worst it plays like its hardware intensive mod.
The graphics do not noticebly improve from the first game (made in 2006) yet requires a considerable leap in hardware. There is no escalation or improvement in any direction. Instead the only novelty injected is the Russian faction, which doesn't offer as much tactical difference as the British or Panzer Elite did in Opposing Fronts.
If you never played the original, I'd recommend this game. If you have, stick with the original.
