When you first start you choose to play Cooperative (online), Cooperatives (Sts link) or Single player.
You can only change this setting outside the game. If playing online you have a choice of 3 public slots or 3 private slots. With no public slots and only private slots only friends can drop into your game, or be invited. With public slots anyone can drop into your game via match making.
Quest are handled like borderlands. If you are at the same point as the host quest completion will be applied to your game. If the host is further ahead it will inform you that quest completion and story progress will not be applied to your game. If you are ahead of the house only the quest the host has available will be active.
