They said you shouldn't go to Ravenholm, and they were right.

Janky, poorly optimized.
On the plus side, the frame rate is so low that UE5 stuttering isn't too noticeable.
A controller can be used, but it's not fun.
Mouse/kb required for menus.
Not even worth it for the nostalgia feels.

A wonderful game, beautifully made.
Excellent music, good controller support.
Highly recommended.
Tip: the first boss kinda sucks, and will probably eat you. You'll want to play all the characters, level them up, play as a family.

2024 report:

- holds up really well. The core gameplay is still fun, mind-bending, exasperating. The writing and voice acting is stellar.

- textures/images are slightly low-res at times, but the game still looks great.

- vsync option no longer works, nor is the frame-rate capped, so you may want to impose vsync and/or a frame-rate cap in your driver of choice. e.g. Nvidia Control Panel.

- controllers are fully supported, unlike Portal 1 and other Valve games of the era.

A masterclass (in annoying the customer).

First, the EA app has to be installed. Because we're savages.

Then you must create an account, but your chosen username ("MrFlibble24601") will be rejected because it's "already in use". So, get a coffee, and try a couple of dozen of other random names until it does work.

But, even IF you can get it to work, the EA app repeatedly pesters you for your (non-saveable) account/password details each time before you play.

So, online required, for a solo game.

No thanks.

Criminally underrated 451 immersion-sim with a Lovecraftian bent.

A masterpiece of story-telling and world-building, earning its place alongside Bioshock 1 and the Dishonored series.

Front-loaded difficulty becomes easier over time, but it's a tough game. But do play on Hard for the best experience.

Rewards exploration, creativity and planning. You *can* go in guns blazing but you'll miss a lot of the game, and you'll die a lot. It's not an action game.

There's an incredible array of interesting weapons and abilities for the player to explore. You won't/can't use them all in a single playthrough.

Expect your first playthough to clock in at 30 to 40 hours.

On the minus side, navigation is very difficult. The game is a maze, instructions are obtuse, and timed deadlines don't help. There's a lot of backtracking, and you'll get lost.

Highly recommended. Beware coffee cups.

4.5/5.

A beautifully realized recreation of a Williams classic.

Very accessible for new players, with easily understood rules, nice flow and very engaging callouts and DMD animations.

The table is well lit, and the table elements are reproduced with attention to detail.

The emulated sound levels and quality are the only real downside.

(Having said that, Zen's physics noises need a revamp. They are lagging behind the current best-of-breed audio in VPX.)

A joy to play. Highly recommended, especially for new players.

2/5. Could have been great, but isn't.

The theme is great. The art direction is great.

I like the music, but it is unsuitable for the modes.

The callouts are thematic, but fairly useless when it comes to telling you what you need to do.

The DMD is better than Zen's usual efforts, but not a patch on most any Stern produced in the last 2 decades.

The skillshot is hugely OP.

The left outlane is a drain monster, due to design problems and over-powered slingshots.

Almost all the modes are just "shoot the flashing lane" over and over.

Multiball with glowing balls is beautiful to behold, but... outlane drains.

The wizard mode is obnoxiously difficult, mostly due to the outlane drain issues, and some poor design.

There are no video modes, mini-games. It's all pretty basic. WYSIWYG.

A disappointing table that doesn't fully take advantage of the theme.

A beautifully polished and addictive game, with excellent controller support.

More than just a Vampire Survivors clone; the addition of terrain provides interesting tactical options and challenges.

You don't need to know anything about Deep Rock Galactic to play or enjoy.

Highly recommended.

Sentient lemur murder simulator.

Now with the pretties and better-ish controller support.

Highly recommended.
