Bottom Line : Not Fun Without Friends

I really want to like this game. I really do. I agonized over or getting this game or letting it go for about a month before finally shrugging and thinking "Meh its just 20 bucks."

A small part of me regrets giving up that 20 because this game is boring as heck.

Early game is incredibly fun. It's harrowing standing there on your tiny af raft, desperately grappling for supplies to build a spear before the shark starts taking chunks out of the only thing keeping you alive. And the night time storms are nice to look at and experience...

But I can tell you exactly when the fun ends. Once you craft the water purifier for fresh water, a grill to cook meat, and maybe the plant potter thing to grow potatoes. Not starving or dying of dehydration are your only real concerns. And once you attach net collectors to your raft even more worries evaporate, the raft will do the job of collecting trash for you!

So what else is there to do? Not much. You can jump into the ocean and pick a fight with the shark but by the time you do everything I listed above the shark stops being a threat and becomes a nuisance. Even when you kill it, it respawns in about 5 minutes to annoy you again.

I'm not impressed with late game content which is simply 'bigger islands with some animals on them' oh and those terrifying puffer fish. Screw those things. The end game radio tower seems to just be a place to find more scrap/materials but not much else. All in all its way too easy to fall into a rut because there is no story, 95% of gameplay is sitting on a raft and hooking stuff towards you or catching it in a net . This game is in DESPERATE need of some kind of quest system/dungeon system and an actual storyline.

At best I can say Raft has an extended life span if you mess around with friends. But in the end, ultimately, you still get bored and it goes from a survival game to "Pimp my Raft" and the shark is just your biggest critic. If you have no friends with this game then mess around with some mods.

So no I can't recommend this game in its current state. Raft was a cool idea in concept that blew up like a balloon but what is inside that balloon is even thinner than air.

Edit: People in the comment section are making excuses that this game is in early access. No duh. I know that. It has been for nearly 2 years (it will be 2 years in may) and in 2 years, they've added more empty islands with bears on them, animals that only serve 1 purpose, and a ship.

I like this game. It's a decent racer with inventive mechanics. I definitely have fun playing it on single player and online mode.

My only problem is, for a game that costs 40 dollars, they could have put in some cutscenes or did better visual representation. Remember Crash Team Racing? The original one on PS1? Not cutscenes but it had hub worlds and visually interesting character select screens. Presentation in this game is bog standard at best and below average at worst, a pity since even Sonic's older forays into racing, Sonic Riders 1 and 2 had cutscenes and better visual presentation.

So overall I think this is a solid game mechanic wise but lazy presentation wise. I recommend buying Team Sonic Racing but only while it is on sale.

I would have liked this game if I had the understanding that it is basically a horror based rogue-lite. Because that's all this is, there is no story. I bought episode 1 thinkng the story would somehow involve all of these characters. I bought the game due to that selling point. Turns out it is actually the total opposite. The story is very bare bones, the characters are your "lives" with which you run the gauntlet. If they die it doesn't matter, if they live it doesn't matter. A very big let down for me.

To make a comparison, it's like Legends of the Hidden Temple. First player runs in solving puzzles, clearing rooms. If they die, the runner up just runs in and picks up where they left off.

Literally. You go to the place they died and pick up their inventory. That is the depth of these characters. I would be fine with this if the game was presented in a more arcadey fashion but it isn't. Either I drastically misread the tone of this game or the presentation is deceptive.

The reason this gets a negative review is because when I died with a character, I decided to reset the chapter and try again, (I was under the impression that characters narratively mattered) but I died twice in the QTE where you have to keep your heart beat under control. I was pushing the button to the heartbeat but still died. My keyboard is new and the space bar has 0 malfunction. The game simply decided to kill me. And a third time I died because the game didn't tell me what I needed to do to live, only giving me the hint after the death. Frustrated I requested a refund but due to the slow ass nature of this game of course I'm already over the 2 hour refund limit.

- Frustrating unfair QTEs

- Skeleton bare bones narrative about "spooky things" where it doesn't matter who the characters are so I have 0 reason to care about any of them.

- Because its a slow paced game, I went over 2 hours in a futile attempt at enjoying it, and now I can't get my money back.

So if you just want a game where you pointlessly jog around and get jump scared by loud noises and none of the characters lives or deaths matter then this is the game for you. But if you like horror games with actual stories and actual characters, don't buy this.

Finally played the final chapter and it was great!

I really enjoyed the puzzle solving, although I feel like in this chapter the puzzles are somewhat easier to solve than from the first two, they were still challenging enough that I felt smart when I figured them out. I'm just saying I had to move back and forth a lot less, and by the time I encountered a new puzzle I usually already had the solution to it in my inventory.

TJD has awesome music. Chapter 3's music was amazing as always although my favorite music came from the second chapter, chapter three's music has some memorable tunes on its own.

Overall I really enjoyed the characters, the setting, and the story. Though I think the ending was a bit rushed in how it was concluded, all the important bits were wrapped up well enough and from what I recall there were no plot holes. (Was the Power company president secretly Nyakazho or was he posessed by Nyakazho? That's my only question.) Another complaint is , I think the ending should have included an epilogue. Just a few slides with voice overs, explaining what the characters did with themselves after their adventure would have been good. The ending feels like it cuts off suddenly.

I know this is a fully concluded story but I'd totally love to see Bwana, Kito, and Lina in another game. Even if they are just cameos.

Oh and did I forget to mention this game series has great music?

This game is frustrating as hell but fun to play. The challenge makes it worth it and is pretty nice to go several rounds with friends. I'm looking forward to the Collapse update.

This game is so cute. I think I'll buy Rivals of Aether because of it!

A fun game but it's very hard. Even when I tried to "cheat" by watching someone else play it, I died several times before I got the hang of it. Maybe I'm just especially bad since the first animal I died to was a goat...

Overall this is a pretty fun game.
It is certainly challenging even on normal mode, to not panic and use all of your heat drinks until they are absolutely nessesary, though I never used the energy drink until near the end when you have to venture outdoors more often. While I felt the controls were stiff, I didn't have too much trouble with aiming. Most of the time I missed my target due to panic.

I really like the save system, it feels like old school resident evil. It is a gamble to use one of your precious saves, so it makes sense to try and not use them for as long as you can, that on top of managing how often you're using up the drinks can feel a bit stressful but not overly so. My only complaint is this; I hated reading notes to find clues, because if I missed a clue, I have to essentially backtrack the entire facility trying to locate one note.

I've only played for a few minutes and I'm hooked. This game is incredibly fun.

I liked the content but the game is very short, dissapointingly short, granted it is a mini series so yeah... There are no puzzles of any kind so if you want some kind of brain teasing, don't look for it here. But you will get a good number of battles with strings of commands you have to hit very fast or die. Good fun if you're into that. After 3 games, I've gotten to a point where caring about characters I know are gonna die anyway is getting harder to do, but there were still a few moments where I was gritting my teeth, hoping that I could save a character who was in trouble.

Oddly enough the bad guy, Norma, ended up being my favorite character. She was sympathetic despite her ruthlessness. And for an old fat lady she's actually kind of bad ass.

Great voice acting but I feel like many many characters were under utilized, I wanted to get to know Pete's crew members as characters but you never get that chance. You won't have time to enjoy the set pieces either as the story rams through like a bullet train. So yeah, the game is lacking, but it is a mini series, I felt some things could have been done better. Get the game while it's on sale.
