To be honest I was not even contemplating Wildlands, but there was a long trial time of it on Uplay. After liking it a lot, I bought it for £16. ... I find the accompanying AI good, and like working with them. I never once died because they did not resuscitate me.
How they prevent you from accomplishing tasks, I have no idea. They usually hang back a bit unless you order them to regroup. Meaning it's almost solo play. You can command them to target individuals if you need a way in. Or they are almost always on top of it when the going gets tough.
Added to that, the campaign is huge and deeply satisfying. Bolivia is staggeringly beautiful, and I feel totally immersed because of it.
