That's fascinating and gels with what I've seen. I've often had to break up male frogs who are in a death grip to drown each other by choking the other person out. I've also seen male toads on male toads on female toads, also in a vice grip sink because they're so intent on being the fertilizer. It's pretty unreal. In late spring when competition heats up, once in a while I'll find a large male frog that was drowned by another as they clashed over territory.
