With 100% completion, i cannot recommend this game. Its a lot of fun at first. then the default control scheme starts to hurt your hand. you get through the first few zones then the game crashes non stop. you forget about the game for a while until you buy a steam deck. you play for a while but want higher fps. you go back to your pc and remember why you stopped. you realize you're close to finishing the games so you decide to say screw it and finish. it crashes and forces the steamdeck to restart. you wait for the cloud save to upload then try pc again. crashes. its working on the deck again. you test every zone and find most of them cause a crash on pc. you fnish the game on the deck. the final fight is a grind. the game is basically over so you finish the speed trials and last collection item that only now unlock. once you finish everything there's no cut scene and it ends leaving you unsatisfied. 3/10. among my friends only i would force myself to suffer this much

TL;DR:
Its a fun game, but go in with tempered expectations

Its just barely a positive review for me. So far Its a good port of a fun but middling switch game. It will get a lot of love, and deserves it, but i almost feel the need to make this a negative review. Its an unfortunate example of a series that deserves better but has flaws and Square Enix wont put in the money to develop a bigger DQM game.

It's less of an upgrade and more of a side-grade to the 3ds titles, but as those didnt release to the west, and on the least popular, if beloved, handheld. There's a good chance most reading this will never play those (there are still ways, even for those who can't read Japanese, but others can explain that). There's only about 526 monsters to DQTW3D's 609, DQMJ3's 700, and the Cobi/Tara remakes 800. Size works differently from the Joker games for better or worse, and ranks aren't well explained. Synthesis is fun as always, but dont rush it, your syntehsized monsters get stat bonuses from the parents, so higher levels before fusing often = better. Music is good, but again not as good as previous games, several tracks from previous games just don't re-appear. Another big loss is that the PC version is missing some online multiplayer, even with other pc players. Its a feature I wouldn't have used much but in the year 2024 cross play saves games with small, splintered populations. Graphically, its a switch game, and not as good looking as DQ11, but its passable.

That being said, the game's biggest flaw on switch was performance, and thats not really a problem on PC. Starter monsters are more than capable of going to the endgame if you choose (when fusing remaking one of the parents with the benefits of both is an option). Not to mention its a monster taming game on steam, and we are always in short supply of those in general, let alone on PC. If you are not familiar with the series (and in the west it it was only on GBC and NDS so no surprise), Don't go in expecting Pokemon, think more along the lines of a typical rpg. It just like Dragon Quest, but playing as the monsters (duh), like persona, or like the Digimon cyber sleuth games. The PC version comes with the DLC and some are incredibly helpful, like a den where you can battle and scout monsters you've previously scouted.

Its a game I want to love, and I do, but go in with tempered expectations.

Edits for things i missed:

Performance:
The steamdeck doesnt even struggle to run this game. this may in part be because several of the switch limitations make their way over. when walking if you keep your eyes on the floor you will notice several zones of distinct detail, when walking you can see at least 5 lines seperating these zone. Monster FPS is better than on the switch but you can still find low framerate monsters if you look for them, especially in one of the zones.

Story:
should be mentioned for anyone new to the game that the story is fine, its really more dressing for the rest of the game, but if you care about understanding it fully or understanding why your character does some things, you'll need to know the story of DQ 4.

Features:
Some reviews have complained about the game being an auto battler. While they're not entirely wrong, the 'set tactics and let your monsters choose' has been present since the original GBC games. Every DQM game, including this one, has a way for you to manually order monsters as well.

There are also two options that make grinding more convenient, you can control the speed of battles, and you can let the game auto select fight for you. these were both in the 3ds games as well.

Nitpicks:
when accessing content that is reliant on the internet (free chest of items every hour, the pseudo multiplayer, etc.), you will need to agree EVERY time. not sure if this is a bug or bad design choice (its not on the switch).

Bugs:
The one bug i have see so far is cloud saves. i had this and managed to fix it but others haven't. The reason i consider this a bug is that the problems so far seem to be unique to this game, and i've had no issue with the other roughly 150 games that are on my deck and PC.

the worst optimized fighting game i have ever tried playing. all of my playtime is relatively informed troubleshooting. there is no excuse for a port to have performance this bad.

i just know someone is going to say my hardware cant handle the game, but with a 2070, i9 14th gen, an nvme ssd, and a 144hz monitor, all equivalent to or far greater than the recommended specs. cpu, gpu, and disk all less than half utilized. i would at least expect the game not to stutter in fights, let alone the fighter selection menu. the game opens to a 'loading shaders' screen every time, fighters take a few seconds to load their avatar in the selection menu, and i've tried every preset from low to ultra high, and customized settings based on other recommendations.

the little fixes i've seen recommended and tried are all typical of fixes for when your computer is actually too powerful for a game, some may know to use them due to needing them for games like the older assassins creed games on newer hardware. they may have made a small difference but not enough to make the game enjoyable, and include dropping the games priority to low in the task manager (need to do this every time you restart your computer), locking it to 60 fps in NVIDIA control panel, turning off steam overlay, forcing full screen mode, forcing your monitor to only be 60fps, etc.

If those fixes work for you, great. the problem is that some of those fixes are just technical enough i would never recommend a game that requires them to my friends

tl;dr play ANY other fighting game on steam, be it tekken 7 or 8, any of the guilty gear or blazblue games, all the street fighter games, or even mortal kombat 9, x, or 11.

keeps crashing, despite not being that demanding compared to other games i play. sometime i'm fine for an hour or 2, other times just reloading my save from the main menu causes problems looking at forums for support i found out that a recent update broke this and the other recent AC games, wont be recommending any of them for now unless Ubisoft fixes their games, or their launcher, whichever is the problem. i know for a fact my hardware is above recommended specs

This game is fun but should still be considered early access. I respect that this is a solo dev, but an unfinished game is an unfinished game.

The main problem: optimization is......... not really there.

The more you improve your operations the worse your framerate, attempting to collect things without a smelter, bucket, or at least foundations will have items sink below the ground, and even with them your items may get flung in the air. Fishing, the only reasonable activity to do at night if you decide not to sleep, and using the fishing pots is a hassle, requiring you to pick up the pot, replacing it in building mode, placing it again, and then picking up the one fish, that isn't even worth much, not to mention it takes forever. just stick with the fishing rod and never get the 'better' option.

Since I'm probably about to be one of just a few negative reviews to have passing automation (more than 10 hours) let's talk about that. This was the part I was looking forward to, and the biggest disappointment, My first automation setup, I had a ram drill that dropped directly into a harvester, and a conveyor system with 3 sorters and 4 outlets (3 smelters and a group of foundations for gems and the ore you can’t sort yet). The first conveyor was a left turn, though this bug would still apply on any system with a turn, even using two straight pieces. The bug here was that some pieces would not turn, the just kept rolling in their initial direction, right off the conveyor belt. This was a problem because to many loose items, framerate drop. So I would stand there, re adding what fell off because it started on the wrong half. Then I tried to get smart, and put a conveyor where items were falling, and another turn piece so they would get back on track on a straight piece. They still rolled right off, not even moving in the direction of the last conveyor they were on. So I got conveyor rails, and instead the pieces just sunk through the conveyor once they got to the edges, so I used two pieces of foundation, the ore still sunk through. Finally, I said screw it, it’s not every piece, acceptable loses. It went well for a while, then I got cocky. 2 more sorters, and second conveyor line that looped back to the harvester to eat dirt dropped by the 3 extra ram drills I added. It was a simple system, but the frame drops were painful. Still on the first point, with simple automation, and the game was practically falling apart. I had fun till this point, but the realization that any progression past here would probably cause the game to crash if I wasn’t careful, and that my ‘acceptable losses’ had build up to where selling the raw ore and gems could buy the most expensive mining point, and it was frustrating. My automation should have worked, but the game engine could not handle it.

I may still come back and play, but the game just isn’t worth the hassle for most, and barely worth it for me. I cannot recommend the game in it’s current state

Honestly, I liked the game, but right now I can't recomend it, It's not just an early access game, its an early access MMO. make sure to read every review, watch gameplay videos, and keep a VERY careful eye on the developers twitter and discord.

original below:

EA Rant(scroll down for actual review and rant TLDR): Early access is impossible to review. Its an open term that has no set definition. Under steam's definitions, it's a catch all for alpha, beta, and finished but not released games. Re:legend seems to fall under one of the first two. Unfortunately, Several steam users have been confused by this in the past, myself included. There is some room for valid complaint, such as the several abandoned games, but that resentment then gets misdirected to games that make an honest effort unlucky enough to share the label. Re:Legend is now one of them to have this happen. This can lead to a game becoming abandonware itself, as the mixed/negative reviews bury it. Some seem to think that alphas are meant to work well even though, even though that contradicts the entire idea of an alpha. This positive review is a mix of my desire for the game to succeed as much as it is a actual review, and counteract the few loud but useless negative reviews that don't mention t

The Review: the game has amazing framework, it scratches a specific itch that hasn't been fulfilled since rune factory 4. If you are a fan of the rune factory series this is worth supporting. This has some similarities to harvest moon and fantasy life as well as pokemon so if you like just one of those but haven't tried rune factory than for you I would call this a maybe.

Some Bugs i have noticed that may influnce your decision: Don't sleep after leaving the first island, save then restart then sleep (this is a know bug.) occasionally picking up an item will fill your entire inventory or give a complete stack(know, sometimes helpful). Water crops not finishing growing (supposedly fixed)

TLDR: If all that still leaves you on the fence, WAIT. At this point the devs know the glitches, the review score will keep your friends away just fine if they're smart enough, and more negative reviews will just prevent the devs from wanting to continue. There are other constructive ways to help with the bugs. To be edited as needed.
