A piece of garbage, you’d be better off spending your money on VF5 R.E.V.O.

easy to learn, hard to master

This is probably now my favourite Mortal Kombat.

This feels like a fresh beginning for the series yet it fits in with the previous games really well.

I say it feels like a fresh beginning because well that is exactly what it is. At the end of MK 11, Liu Kang became the keeper of time and decided to reset the timeline for a fresh start and all bad guys would never become well powerful enemies that threaten Earthrealm or Outworld.

This game takes place in that new timeline with Raiden and Kung Loa being students, Hanzo is not Scorpian as Bi-Han never murdered him and his clan. Bi-Han remained a good guy and Sub Zero (for a bit) and his little brother Kuia Liang took up the mantle of Scorpion and remains a good guy.

Johnny Cage remained an actor until he meets Liu Kang and the others and is needed for Mortal Kombat and so many other changes for a better timeline thanks to Liu Kang.

This is all good until an unknown person gives Shang Tsung the means to rise to power and try to take over.

The story may be slit into 2 parts but for me it does not feel like iv been cheated out of the whole story and have to pay extra for the rest of it. Part 1 is a full story with a beginning, middle and ending with a post credits scene teasing part 2. Almost like teasing a sequel.


it also feels like a new beginning in the art direction that this game took.

MK X and 11 felt really dark and gritty in terms of their art style and how the games looked, but MK 1, its brighter and more colourful and its apparent from the second you load up the game because the menus take place in this lush forest with tons of colour and peacefulness and the stages also reflect this from the gardens of the training ground, to Johnny cage's apartment. Which can all be set to different times of the day giving them more variety.

Characters also have been re-designed and they all look amazing. even Raiden being a lot younger now and not even being Lord Raiden yet.

My favourite addition to this game is actually when your loading into a fight. Every character and character match up have unique lines that they say to each other and i just love that little touch as it doesn't give you just a loading screen. Now that would be a lot more effective if i had put this game on my main SSD as that would make the load time faster. So for me they say their lines and then just stare at each other for a few seconds while the stage loads but i don't mind it at all.

This game also introduced what they call 'Kameo'. what this means is after you choose your fighter, you choose another character from a separate list who will then assist you in the fight. This is actually a cool idea and it gives some characters who didn't make it into the main fighter list such as Jax, Sonya, Frost and more.

Of course Mortal Kombat is famous for its over the top and gory moves and Fatalities and MK 1 does not disappoint. The fatalities for a lot of the characters are amazing.

There is a good base roster of characters for you to choose from but obviously there are DLC characters including 3rd party ones that include Homelander, Peacemaker, Omni Man, Conan, the T-1000 and my favourite addition Ghostface and these characters are translated to MK 1 the best that they can from their moves and fatalities that reference the movies and TV shows they came from, to their lines such as Ghostface calling Homelander a fascist Superman and how that would be a scary movie or that Peacemaker commenting on the fact that the T-1000 looks like his dad due to the fact that the actor who played the T-1000, then played Peacemakers dad in the show.

Now something i thought was a bit of a disappointment was the customization, It feels restrictive as you don't get to customise different parts of an outfit just the whole thing at once and the 2nd customizable thing being the characters accessory (mask or hat or weapon). I think it would have benefited from more customizable options.

I'm also not a huge fan of how much grinding you have to do to unlock more costumes and finishers.

However those complaints do not put me off this game. I really love this game and am having a blast playing it. I even finished the story and bought the Deluxe upgrade to unlock all DLC fighters, Kameos, costumes and Part 2 of the story.
