It does everything and more to be the perfect 2D sandbox, from original art styles, beautiful gameplay mechanics, as well as fun and exciting boss battles. Items are an important aspect for progressing throughout the game. Terraria's wonderful crafting and combining mechanics makes great use of this. One of the major reasons I find myself always getting back into this game is because of the love and care the devs have for their creation. It's not just some spin-off, since the release of 1.0 there has been thousands of additional and content added, somewhat reviving the game as if it just came out.
