I have beaten the game with some sparse internet tips here and there. I will keep this review brief.

This game is heavy on lore puzzles. That is to say, you need to engage with the story around you in order to progress. Progression in this game is unlike others, as the game is very non-linear. Progression, rather, takes the form of knowledge. As you learn, new paths become known.

There is a true ending to reach, and a conclusion to be had.

I encourage you to play the game as blind as possible, but if the puzzles end up being too hard for you, or you're not patient enough to try and figure them out, don't feel too ashamed to google search for tips or answers. The puzzles in this game can be frustratingly vague at times, and I ended up searching up a fair deal. I figure my playtime would be over double if I hadn't searched, with most of that added playtime dedicated to a small handfull of puzzles that, in retrospect, still seem fairly nonsensical, and not clear. It may also be that I am simply impatient and don't like floundering around for hours testing various hypotheses and feeling like I'm going nowhere. I also figure the game would have felt more impactful and the ending more earned if I had truly beaten the game blind, but it likely would have taken me ages to do.

It's a good game. One of the greats, even. Not sure how to process what I even played, I guess this review is my way of doing so.

Reviewing only the campaign, given I was unable to connect to multiplayer, not that I was interested in PVP regardless. Was gifted the game by a sibling while it was on sale for $3. All the playtime I currently have is the campaign and it took me under 4 hours. I have never been a person for story games, regardless of the game-play. I fail to get invested into the stories of most of these games, and I dislike linear game-play as well. Despite that I am leaving a positive review. The main reason is the polish. Gameplay was good, difficulty felt well tuned, experience was smooth, and little to no gripes with the game. Not the most exciting game I have played, but never did I feel like I'd rather be doing something else while playing. I don't see myself replaying the game, as I don't feel the campaign is worth playing a second time. I would not suggest buying the game for the campaign alone. While it is good, I do not feel it warrants a $30 price tag. At the $3 my sibling got it for, however, it's a good few hours of campaign and the gameplay is good enough to remain engaging for the duration of said campaign. I cannot bring myself to rate the game negatively based on what mostly boils down to personal preference.

TLDR: I got 4 hours of entertainment from the campaign, and I think it's worth picking up at a discount for that campaign. Can't speak on the multiplayer given I was unable to experience it.

Tentative positive review. Has a plethora of obnoxious issues from bugs to unintuitive controls but damn if it's not a winner in concept. Has save files and permanent progression, so you and the boys can work to decorate your awesome base and even bring back and collect nick-knacks you find in the world. It's not perfect and it definitely screams early access, but what's here is extremely promising.

Setting it apart from other Lethal-likes is the permanent progression of customizing your prison cell and looting items. Instead of some ever increasing quota, each run is self contained and has a few set objectives and a time limit. You can choose to either do the easy path of doing company objectives, or the hard one of escaping the island on your own. You keep resources you've collected once you escape and then get to use those resources in future runs if you choose to. If you fancy losing all your progress on loss, don't worry, there's an option for that, although I can't promise ever increasing difficulty. Perhaps in the future for those who aren't satisfied without pushing their limits.

The phone. You and everyone else get a phone with a lot of functions. You can call people, which acts like a radio, you can take photos, you can send photos into the group chat or directly to other players, you can check objectives, check your gps, or play snake if you have nothing better to be doing. Similar to Content Warning, photos taken are, by default, saved to your PC, unless you decide you don't want that. The phone is a neat mechanic, and although I've only played with two people, I can only imagine the humor that will blossom from a shared 4 person group chat with constant photo bombardment and phone notifications constantly getting people killed.

The car. You're not trapped in a cramped building with knockoff SCPs. Instead you're on an island with spiders. You are given a car that you and your friends can drive around from place to place. Don't make the mistake of thinking you can run over the mutant spiders, however, as it's a quick way to lose your car. The car is vital to your victory, so you'll need to guard it with your life, and preferably keep some materials to fix it close at hand.

The buildings. Truthfully, a tad bland, and I hope to see this aspect improved in the future. Most buildings look exactly the same with a different exterior color, with a few exceptions like the gas station. They are essentially randomly generated blocks of rooms with loot inside. I hope in the future these buildings will be more distinguished from one another, being populated with interior design helping to convey what building you're actually in. That being said, I prefer this to the same buildings with random loot, as not knowing the exact layout is preferable.

The spiders. There's not a lot of variety. There's a couple of types and for most of them I couldn't tell you what they do, other than that the black ones are silent and I hate them. A lot of variety in size as well, ranging from within realistic spider range to the size of a trailer home with the thunderous footsteps to convey such. I'm hoping we will see more interesting enemy types in the future. As for combat, it's rather simple, and once you figure it out you can kill pretty much any spider with no effort. The difficulty arrives from when you're stuck with no escape and get jumped by a dozen bear sized spiders and get expectantly mauled. Having friends and playing smart should help avoid this situation entirely.

Character customization. A bit disappointed there's no way to change your color, but it's not the end of the world. You can choose a face if you'd like, or even upload any image from your PC to use as a face. You can also choose a dance, but to my friend's dismay, no orange justice.

My main gripes with the game are not really dealbreakers, hence the positive review. The phone controls are confusing and sometimes not well explained, like that you can put it away by left clicking. When in group chats I sometimes struggle to quit typing. The only way it seems to quit typing is to send your message, which is annoying when I'm trying to press R to close group chat and start filling the text box with R. It's not the end of the world, and with more experience with the controls it feels fine, but it's still a hurdle I had to overcome. There's also a lot of mechanics not well explained, and times where I just threw my shoulders up and accepted some reality that made no sense, like my friend dying, me not being able to revive them with a medkit, a spider dragging his corpse, and after killing that spider, he just gets up on his own without needing to be revived. Lots of bugs as well, like getting jumped by some spiders and getting launched high into the stratosphere, so high I could see the spiders on the moon. At times I was frustrated with the game, but at the end of the day that's not exactly unexpected when you buy an early access game, especially one as small as this by a single developer and only a few months into early access.

For any prospecting player, know that this game doesn't offer a large amount of depth, but is good fun for enjoying with friends and iterates on the lethal-like formula in a number of ways that make me quite pleased. I'd suggest giving this one a shot, especially if you feel other lethal-likes struggle to nurture the social aspects of their games, since this one clearly has that in mind and then some. You will run into frustrations here and there, especially with poorly explained mechanics and vague guidance or tooltips. Beneath all of that though is what I believe to be the skeleton of a great entry to the genre.

Of my negative reviews, this one is more hesitant than many. I don't have any sharp criticism like I usually do with games I don't recommend. I don't even particularly think this game is bad. But neither do I think it's particularly good. Ignoring minor issues, like spelling errors and such, the game is mostly polished and nice. Without spoiling too much, however, this game is a linear story with, in my opinion, an unsatisfying ending. The story throughout was not bad, and it wasn't ever particularly unpleasant while streaming it to a friend. But I found myself pretty much just walking from place to place and listening to dialogue that was honestly not that interesting. I've played games with linear storied and a lot of them leave me with a unique, strong, lasting feeling, but this game hasn't really left me with any particular feeling at all, which I think is a poor showing for a game focused on it's story and narrative.

As for how it performs horror game, not great. Horror makes up roughly half the playtime, and it's not particularly scary. I could go in depth about why, but that would get wordy fast.

It can be indicated that more content may come to the game, so we shall see where it goes.

Cannot suggest playing this in the current state. Simply doesn't feel fun. Little to no guidance that resulted in lots of situations where we walked around for 20 minutes at a time missing a lever that wasn't very well indicated in a fairly dark corner. Enemies start spawning very immediately with mechanics not well explained and with no rhyme or reason. It took us forever to get to the 2nd section only to suffer severely from poorly understood sanity mechanics, poorly indicated routes, and a random enemy boss fight where we didn't have the proper tools to handle it. It feels like nobody who didn't develop the game actually playtested this despite having a free demo period. Will try to get to episode 2 some time, but as of right now, cannot recommend

Not to mention lobbies stuck in infinite loading more times than they work making having to restart all the more frustrating.

Edit 1: Lots of frustration from bottles seemingly phasing through enemies instead of stunning them, that or a consequence of poorly explained behavior. I can't know for sure which.

Edit 2: Failed to teleport me during the final sequence of chapter 1. Confirmed that bottles just phase through the chapter 1 main antagonist's head for no reason.

In it's current state, not for 30 dollars. It's early access though, and it has the trappings of something actually fun. They claim to be fixing most of the glaring issues towards the end of the month, so looking forward to that and new content. The game has a lot of problems, but I encourage you to not write the game off in it's entirety, and let Early Access take it's course. Follow it and see where it's sitting in a couple of months, because I feel it's worth seeing where this goes.

The gameplay is fine. If you just want a chill fishing game, it's not bad, it lives up to the $5 price tag.

The developer has put pride tags into the game that you can have below your name. Nothing wrong with that. However, in response to people on the forums asking for a straight tag, they added the "straight" tag, in quotes, with the description "mhm" and a price tag of 9999, as compared to the 75 price tag of every other pride title.

This alone is nothing more than a mostly harmless joke, but when people complained about it on the forums, saying that it felt discriminatory, the community widely fired back and characterized them all as trolls, bigots, and nazis. Given this is a game where you join lobbies to play with other people, it may be worth knowing the kind of people you'll run into.

Overall, I'm refunding the game, not because it's bad, but because I don't want to give my money to someone so spiteful and childish as to act this way. I don't need reminded how much LGBTQ activists seem to hate me for my identity, and I don't want to deal with people who's immediate response to complaints about feeling discriminated against is a resounding "piss off."

TLDR: Developer mocks straight people in what can be assumed to be retaliation against "trolls," most of the community tells straight people to piss off for complaining about being mocked. Game is fine, but if you're not a part of their protected class, you may experience discrimination.

Edit: Unrelated to the comments or the complaints levied in the rest of my review, but I'm sure you may have seen other negative reviews mentioning hackers, specifically Grincher. Basically their offline mode isn't actually offline and is apparently easy to get into for people with some technical know-how. This is the response on the reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/webfishing/comments/1gp5axj
So the game also has some security issues worth considering and are being addressed poorly. The game is P2P and clearly not secure even if you choose to play offline, which is a major security risk. No matter how you play the game your server is browsable and joinable by anyone with seemingly no way to stop them. The response is to undo damage done to your game by cheaters with a save editor. This is a terrible stance for a developer to take and demonstrates a complete disregard for consumer safety, not to mention the audacity to ban people from discussing a serious security issue without providing a platform to discuss it. Once again this calls into question the integrity of the developer and associated staff.

Decent tool for learning morse code, though it would be nice if there was a way to reverse the training, where you hear morse code and then write out what letter is being heard, to help learn the sounds by ear, but this was surprisingly effective at teaching me morse code in only a few hours, and I feel confident enough to write in morse code, albeit slowly.
