UPDATE: I have since bought and played the game for about 18 hours, and this update contains my thoughts on it. The older, snarkier version remains below this one.

Sandstorm feels like an improvement over the OG Insurgency in almost every way. More guns, better animations, crisper graphics, much more immersive action and animation - this is one of the rare cases where the sequel actually develops on the original foundation. Heck, what used to be mods for the OG Insurgency have resurfaced in this game as not paid mods, but rather genuine in-game mechanics that feel much more polished. Turns out that games get better as time goes on when the developer is actually invested in its core audience - learn from NWI, Bethesda.

The only downfalls so far are that there are a considerably larger number of bugs (that could be attributed to the dev changing engines for the game), the menu UI is clunkier and slightly worse than the first game (like how are you not going to let me browse servers while I'm in a match?), and the graphics sometimes completely freak out on me (despite playing it on a RTX3060). These are minor nitpicks at best, but I really hope NWI fixes them if they ever find this review.

I did not buy any DLC, and I can satisfactorily say that you do not have to, either. All you are losing out on are gun skins - customization is extremely flexible, cosmetic-wise, even without the DLC cosmetics. Good job, NWI, thank you. While you played the first game for fun, you have the optional objective of grinding towards specific cosmetics in this game (past level 20, of course). The first twenty levels are great, as you look forward to unlocking more and more classes - which means more and more guns, of course.

Guns are class-locked, which is fine since the class system is barely a class system (atleast when it comes to the meta). Co-ordination isn't all that important, and it hits the sweet spot where you can either be extremely ballsy and go full-on xXx_lonewolf360_xXx, or make it a proper tactical Squad sim you ordered on Wish. Modding is absent due to the switch from Source to UE4, and that is something I hope to see in the near future.

In a nutshell, you cannot spell nutshell without n u t - get it while you can, and I'll see you on the battlefield for some blue-on-blue action.

OLDER REVIEW:
I'm just here to say that the game plus the DLC separately costs cheaper than the Gold Edition bundle - apparently game bundles are now offered at negative discounts.

Good job, NWI. Come back and fix the OG Insurgency you guy-

TWO EDITS: One, FHI might be responsible for the ♥♥♥♥♥♥ implementation of the bundle. Two, they have since added something extra (I tried to visit the Wayback Machine to see what changed, but this page was not archived by that site), and now you can save a grand total of 0.2 cents! (more or less depending on the regional pricing).

COME FIX OG INSURGENCY YOU GUY-

I would say that this game is worth every dollar, but I got it for half a dollar.

Annoying loading screens and outdated texture draw aside, the game is fun. The hub world impressed me, the controls are top-notch, the camera gets a little janky, the characters are memorable/forgettable depending on how hard you keep tapping the spacebar, and there's some RPG-like ♥♥♥♥♥ as well. I'm looking forward to 100% this and update the damn review.

Getting Good with Ben Fodder is an indie souls-like that derives inspiration from an old B-rated game called Dark Souls. In this game, you start off at the final boss fight with the first minion spawning faster than you - Tree. After dodging Tree, you have won the game. But the game doesn't tell you that, because it's jealous. So it throws a mountain on your head and takes away your legs. At least you can still use the Level 3 hammer you stole from the blacksmith at Snake Fortress.

10/10, Death Stranding.

I have played Raft since their ItchIO days, and I can't believe this game has become what it has become. 7/10.

Raft as a game was simple - hunt stuff, make boat. There was no heading anywhere, and I always thought that was a meta-commentary on the sea and how it had no heading either. Of course, the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ shark has been there longer than I have as well. It was similar to what The Long Dark is now - a very peaceful suffering.

The game in itself is fun, like most other survival-y explore-y titles. There's fully realized islands that drop your FPS hard when they spawn - I'm afraid of the larger landmasses. You are blessed by the sea and its gamer salt, and can get a continuous supply of wood, leaves, scrap, and barrels. The amount of crafting materials has gone up significantly. The ability to decorate your raft has gone up significantly. The tools at your disposal have gone up significantly. But, has the game gone up significantly?

Eh.

Here's the thing - Raft used to be an survival-idler of sorts, and that was a weird combination in which I found myself spending hours. Now, there's stuff to get to. There's the looming feeling of an end, when you have so much stuff that the survival part wouldn't matter. The hitboxes are janky, and I experienced that firsthand as a warthog buckaroo'd me from a mile away and yet my spear wouldn't dare breach it's soft fleshy belly. The game never told me I would soon have a net launcher, so I expended two spears and poked a running llama to death, only to find that they yielded nothing. The ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Screechers need a bow and arrow to be finished off, which you have to learn the hard way. It's fun that the game doesn't hold my hand, and yet it feels too janky to play without a friend or hints.

Of course, the beta title still feels like a beta, with half-optimized framerates and video graphics. Thank goodness this isn't a competitive first person shooter. Anyway, like I said before, 7/10. Fun game. Makes you feel like Bear Gryllis, if Bear Gryllis had to hook wood and fish shoes. Go play Minecraft or something.
