I greatly enjoy this game, and I think it's fun and all that, but my recent revisits to it have left me... disappointed. It's not that anything changed, quite the opposite, in fact. The thing that disappoints me is that there's an uncomfortable amount of content that, depending on whether or not you think the devs are aware of it, is pretty ignorant or outright prejudiced.
A few examples:
- The Dye Trader is a pretty blatant stereotype, being a brown-skinned, turban-wielding man who, fights with a scimitar, and lives in the desert.
- The Arms Dealer is another, being a black man that runs a shady firearm sales business. He is also the most sexual NPC by far, another common stereotype for black people.
- The Witch Doctor is a stereotype for certain African tribespeople, and while on the topic of African people, you can literally summon pygmy servants. There are numerous references to voodoo dolls and voodoo as a spooky magic, when it is literally a term that refers to several different religious practices that originated in the African diaspora. The devs just really love to be ignorant/racist about African folks, I guess.
- Herplings and Derplings are a reference to "herp derp" or "hurr durr", phrases to make fun of the way that mentally disabled people speak.
- This is comparatively minor, but it's just so childish: there's an in-game event called the Blood Moon, and when you talk to female NPCs during it their dialogue is changed to be more irritable because they're PMSing.
None of these (nor the other instances I didn't mention) individually ruin the experience, but when I play through the game it gets kind of tiresome to ignore these easily-fixable problems. I find it really unlikely that no one, over the entire 11+ years Terrraria has been out, has said anything to the devs about these problems.
