An Unexpected Reunion

Kimi ga Nozomu Eien, I watched the 2007 anime about three years ago, and Takayuki choosing Mitsuki over Haruka annoyed me so much that I just knew I had to buy this game the second I saw it to fix the bad aftertaste. But that was all there was to it, I thought I'd just play Haruka's route and call it a day. Oh boy, how wrong I was... What was supposed to be a lighthearted read turned out to be one of the most soul-crushingly well-written, emotionally intelligent pieces of media I'd ever stumble upon, shaking me to my core.

The Main Heroines

Suzumiya Haruka: By far and away my favorite character. Going into this VN after having just watched the anime, I thought I would like her route the best, simply because I already didn't like Mitsuki to begin with, but I definitely didn't expect to find a character that would resemble me in so many ways. "How can I tell him to stay by my side, when I'm like this?!" Such a simple yet powerful sentence, resonating deeply with me and my life experience. After the events of chapter 1, Haruka has to face being alone in a world where everyone's time kept moving whereas hers didn't. Despite her frail look, she proves to be the most resilient character in the novel, whether it be accepting Takayuki choosing someone else, or coming to terms with the feelings he harbors for her, always thinking about how everyone around her will inevitably be affected by her choices. I didn't quite like the turn chapter 3 of her route takes, but it does flesh out her character even more, in an unexpected way.
Haruka probably isn't the girl who deserves Takayuki's love the most, but she is by far the one who needs him the most.
Thus, I consider this the true route of the game.

Hayase Mitsuki: Despite relating immensely to Haruka, I have to admit, Mitsuki is probably the most realistic character in the novel. The writers did a great job handling the parallel between her and Haruka, making Mitsuki seem like a strong-willed, independent girl, while hiding deep insecurity and frailty inside, whereas Haruka shows unexpected resilience. In almost every route, Mitsuki fails to cope with Takayuki choosing anyone but her until the very last acts of chapter 2, even resorting to baby-trapping him in one of the bad endings just to prove to Haruka that even if she couldn't have Takayuki's heart, she could have something else. It's fair to say Mitsuki probably loved Takayuki the most; she spent the most time with him and sacrificed her dream to help him get back on his feet.
It's safe to say she's the girl who deserves Takayuki's love the most, but probably the one who needs him the least.

Suzumiya Akane: I expected the two main routes to be good, but I didn't think Akane's route would peak almost as high as theirs. Akane has every reason to fall in love with Takayuki, with him being the only person she could share the pain of seeing her loved one stuck in a coma . The transition from Akane originally visiting the hospital to check on Haruka, to visiting in hopes of bumping into Takayuki, and eventually visiting out of duty, is not only compelling but feels genuine and humane. Akane is a very realistic and straightforward character. I think the major selling point for that is how she forces herself to hate both Takayuki and Mitsuki upon finding out he "forgot" Haruka, unbeknownst to the truth.
Akane has the best character progression in the entire novel, and I stand by it.
Playing a major and different role in each route, she's the wildcard of this VN and has my second favorite route.

The Secondary Heroines

Hoshino Fumio: This one's weird for me, because it's easy to tell the writer for her route was different from the one(s) who handled the main routes. What gives it away is how different her character is compared to the other routes. In particular, she demonstrates a lot of thoughtfulness and kindness in Haruka’s route, both when she went out of her way to buy picture books for Takayuki to give to Haruka , and when she cried out of happiness when Haruka finally got discharged. She's generally shown always doing her best to push Takayuki and Haruka together. In spite of that, her route throws all of that into the trash and turns her into a literal h0e, who tempts Takayuki into sleeping with her after getting him drunk, basically just for the sake of ruining his reputation with basically every character by exposing him.
Solid side character, but her route just feels odd and doesn’t really fit within the story.

Daikuuji Ayu: By far the best side character, a good mix of anime slop tsundere and realism. Apparently, the word "tsundere" was originally coined to describe Ayu. Gotta pay respect to the OG. Takayuki falling in love with Ayu is absolutely valid and fits within the story. Her route depicts a slightly different Takayuki who fails to bear the weight of guilt and responsibility towards Mitsuki and Haruka and ends up finding escape in Ayu’s love. A nice tale of "forbidden" love between a rich girl and a commoner. Ayu's route definitely isn't for everyone; I recommend reading it only if you have a high tolerance for anime slop.
Niche route, but a solid one nonetheless, bonus points for absolutely dunking on Mitsuki by the end of it.

Tamano Mayu: Basically a dumbed-down version of Ayu, her character is even more anime slop and clearly designed to appeal to a certain fandom. I don't think Takayuki falling for her is super ridiculous, but it's definitely a stretch. I'm sure the writer for this route was also aware, and despite being Ayu’s parallel route, it ends up being way shorter and quite shallow. I didn't hate Mayu or her route, but it's definitely among the weaker writing in this work, with nothing too remarkable about it.

Homura Manami: There are no right words to describe the profound hatred I harbor toward this character. Her route is the biggest stain on this masterpiece of a visual novel. I have countless gripes with it, starting with the fact that Takayuki is unnecessarily dumber here than in any other route by a long shot. I have no idea how the writer's fetishes ended up leaking into this work, but here we are. If you're an experienced VN reader, you might have developed a decent tolerance for all kinds of fetishes and violence, but even then, this route might leave a strong impression due to how messed up it is. I'll quickly summarize what's in this route to prepare you mentally: Mindbreak, grape, genital reassignment surgery.
This route sucks and embodies everything wrong with the VN genre, making it inaccessible to most people. Follow my advice and skip this abomination.

Final Thoughts

If we consider only the three main routes, in my eyes, this visual novel is close to flawless, with some of the most compelling writing I've had the pleasure to witness, great drama, great characters, and a good OST. Some side routes are solid, but I don't encourage casual readers to waste time on them, as they most definitely wouldn't find them appealing.

Final Score: 9.25/10
