I cannot recommend Hollow Knight enough. It alternates between adorable, sad, and dark, with more skill than most games that try to be just one of those things at a time. Hollow Knight does all of it so well that it's both beautiful and fascinating. Easily on par with Super Metroid and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, while being unique enough to stand on its own.
