The game has extreme depth of customization in the individual characters down to the types of metal and colors that your characters wear, and the different sections of their weapons/armor. And I for one am a nut when it comes to fashion and character customization.

The game-play has a very high skill ceiling but also a very low skill floor. It isn't very hard for someone who has played other video games to get into and understand the basic mechanics if they haven't touched it before.

Mastering the mechanics and learning different combos and the way each individual hero fights however is a daunting task and has a lot of information behind it, knowing what attacks you can get away with and how you need to punish different mistakes on each hero, should you throw a light or a heavy attack at this time? Which attack does the most damage in certain situations so you can maximize the amount you do? Side or top heavy? Should I throw them on the ground now or preserve my stamina and try to get them to make another mistake? There are a ton of split second questions you have to ask yourself during the fights.

By far the worst part of the game is the toxicity, sections of the community are extremely toxic and a single player that doesn't have the same knowledge you do can and will cause you to lose a fight that you could have easily won by yourself had they left you alone, or won faster if they knew what they were doing. Random teammates making mistakes in a fight can and will get you killed, especially when they play a hero that has large hitboxes considering the game has friendly fire.

As long as you can keep your head and are willing to acknowledge when you make a mistake and aren't always trying to blame your teammates you can enjoy this game.

This was the game that originally got me into PC gaming about a decade ago or so. Back on a measly below average laptop from ~2010 this was about the only game I could consistently run other than Minecraft. I had a blast and made plenty of friends and even joined some communities that sadly don't exist today.

I don't play it nearly as much as I did back then. Mainly because of the cheater/bot epidemic that kinda turned me off from the game in the last few years. If you stick to community servers you should be okay though. I will say getting back into the game after a long time of not playing it or being a new player would be pretty difficult, at this point most of the people still playing the game are veterans and understand pretty much every mechanic in the game to the point where it can feel daunting to try to get back into the flow of things. Although I would say it would be worth it in the end.

For anyone new to PC I highly recommend TF2 as a good stepping stone into the FPS genre on PC especially since it is free to play. And for anyone that is experienced in games and either moved to PC from console or just haven't played it, it is worth looking at it as this was one of the classic gems from another period of gaming, a piece of gaming history if you will. A game that originally was pay to play, going free to play, and creating its own organic economy of cosmetics, weapons, and items, even having its own community created currencies throughout its life time.

In the end I say give it a shot, it might surprise you.
