DOOM Eternal is the long awaited sequel to DOOM (2016), with more ripping and more tearing.

Story:

Set two years after the events of DOOM, the earth is suffering from a demonic invasion that has wiped out most of humanity. As the Slayer, your goal is simple, kill everything in your way and stop the demonic invasion.

Just like last time the story takes a back seat to actual gameplay, but there is overall much more lore. There's hidden notes that explain what is going on with the world and it helps fills in the gaps, but if you don't want to hunt these down, don't worry about it, you won't be lost cause the overall goal is explained well to you and it's pretty simple.

Graphics:

DOOM Eternal is a damn good looking game. The environments look absolutely stunning and there's a bunch of things going on in the background. In the chapters where you're on earth there's planes crashed into buildings, fire coming out from the ground and all that sort of good stuff. Also when you're in the demonic worlds they look absolutely jaw dropping.

The character models are also really good. The demons are like the classic DOOM models, but with a modern twist and they all look great. I just love their updated looks and honestly it shows how much care went into making them all. Also ripping them apart and just seeing their insides is an absolutely spectacular showcase of the brutality of the game.

Audio:

The thing most people remember from DOOM (2016) is the absolutely amazing score by Mick Gordon. The soundtrack was so amazing, I thought Mick outdid himself to the point where it was going to be hard to outdo himself and I'm glad to say he absolutely outdid himself. Once you start the game and the main menu music kicks in, you know you're in for aone hell of a ride and then when you start ripping demons apart and the metal music kicks in, it makes your blood pump faster and faster.

Other sound effects like the guns all have that meaty sound I like when firing weapons. Everything is loud and bombastic and it makes firing most weapons super satisfying, especially the Ballista's Arbalest upgrade, when it charges up when the shot lands on a body.

The voice acting is great across the board, albeit it's mostly VEGA that talks to you throughout the entire game, others do great jobs, I also really liked how other humans interact with the Slayer, it's pretty funny stuff.

Gameplay:

DOOM Eternal gameplay wise, is better than DOOM (2016) in every way. Before I begin, if you play first person shooters regularly, I highly recommend picking either Ultra Violence or Nightmare difficulty settings, they are absolutely the way this game is meant to be experienced.

The game itself is pretty much more of the good stuff from DOOM (2016), you run and gun the demons and then you rip them apart with the glory kills which make a glorious comeback. However there's more stuff around this time. One of the biggest things is how ammo is rewarded to the player. In the previous game, when you glory kill a demon you would get ammo back and that allowed you to just use a single gun for pretty much the entire game and never have to switch around. In DOOM Eternal glory kills do not replenish ammo, so once a gun runs out of ammo you either need to find an ammo pickup or a chainsaw a demon, but you won't be able to do that every encounter, which require you to adapt to the situation, quickly changing between weapons once ammo runs out for one of your weapons.

The new level design is also really damn good. It was decent in DOOM (2016), but Eternal blows it out of the water. Each arena you fight has a lot of elevation so moving from one place using the new "parkour" system feels great. New additions to movement include poles which allow you to swing on them to get some height and allow you to reach higher platforms, wall climbing and a grappling hook which is attached to the super shotgun which allow you to get close to the demons and shoot them straight in the face.

There's also a hub in the form of The Fortress of DOOM. There's nothing much to do here, but just find collectibles and just look around how DOOM Slayer lives. It's a neat little addition, albeit there's not much reason to spend here.

Of course there's also the Battle Mode. This is a 1V2 game mode where one player plays as the Slayer and two players play as the demons and you fight each other. This game mode is simply awful and honestly I have no idea why ID thought this was a good idea. It's not fun and honestly it ends up being really boring. I played a few matches and all it made me want to do is go back to the single player and rip and tear demons there.

Verdict:

DOOM Eternal is an amazing sequel and improves on DOOM (2016) in almost every way. It's much more violent, much more metal and just amazing overall. It delivers a solid and challenging campaign which will last you up to 14 hours and it's worth every penny.

Final Rating:
10/10

Pros:
+ Graphics are great
+ Gameplay is improved
+ Improved mobility spices up combat
+ Soundtrack is absolutely amazing

Cons:
- Battle Mode sucks
