7/10
In summary, my experience with the game has been enjoyable but with limitations. I'm hesitant to immediately give it a positive review because, although it's visually impressive and immersive as a space soldier simulator (automatically beating out Starfield), it falls short in terms of content and variety. After playing for 14 hours and reaching level 12, I've found the game's arsenal to be disappointingly small.

The game's visuals are cinematic and striking, creating an immersive atmosphere, but the worlds feel repetitive and spammy. Enemies, environments, buildings, and even other players seem interchangeable and copy-pasted. Everyone feels like a stock-yellow soldier equipped with similar gear, battling the same enemies with the same behaviours. The game offers cosmetic sets, but they are locked behind progression stages that become increasingly time-consuming, along with a daily store that requires in-game currency, blegh.

On the positive side, the gunplay is tight and engaging, Arrowhead really nailed the gameplay loop, all heightened with a beautiful soundtrack. The game successfully combines space industrialisation with absurdist patriotism, reminiscent of a cleaner version of Warhammer with elements of Destiny. The gameplay is fast-paced and exhilarating, requiring constant movement and quick reflexes, where you're always dipping and diving, firing, dodging, reloading, and dancing on the arrow keys while running around rabid. However, it can also be frustrating due to sensory overload and environmental factors like fog and rain, which can impair your vision and lead to punishing deaths. The slow status in the game feels like a death sentence, and mistakes can result in brutal cooldowns, quickly turning a casual game into frustration overload.

While I appreciate the game's recent release, it needs better class customizability and more content. Updates are expected to improve these aspects, but for now, the game feels lacking in depth. Adding secondary perks to stratagems and expanding the ship module beyond generic modifiers would be welcome improvements. That, and more guns to spread liberty!

Overall, despite its limitations, the game is solid and incredibly fun, and I look forward to future updates. It's only going to get better!

coincidentally I was reading the book before this was on sale, and oh boy was it worth it. Love seeing the references and deviations to the book, Khan is still a badass!
