I will be comparing this game to Dead By Daylight, purely on it's 1v4 aspect. In truth the game is more like the HL2 mod Zombie Master, not that many would have played it.

From the bit I've played, I think it's a lot of fun, actually. Survivors feel a bit clunky but you have far more to do than say Dead By Daylight. Overall it feels quite balanced as the Mastermind has to actually think about enemy placement if he doesn't want Tyrone or Samuel to just spawnkill them.

Tyrone being able to prevent Mr X from instakilling is quite strong, he's probably my favorite survivor to play, but I also enjoy Valerie quite a bit, too. I haven't had any games as January or Samuel, but having played mastermind I can say for sure that January is very strong. I can't say much about Samuel, but being a melee focused survivor definitely gives him an edge.

The mastermind is fun to play as, too, and it's surprising how quickly he can turn a game around with a single bad play. It feels like it's a lot harder to bully the mastermind than a Killer in Dead by Daylight, for sure, as Mr X can down survivors in a matter of seconds, and as long as Tyrone isn't nearby, can instakill reliably.

The biggest issue I think is the queue times, sometimes matches would take about 5 minutes, which isn't awful but could be better, all the way up to 10 minutes, which seems a bit off. Ideally a random queue shouldn't take more than 2 minutes.

I genuinely hope this game receives more content as time goes on, because without it, it may not be active for very long.

Give it a shot while you can!

In my original review, I initially suggested you get this game on sale, not necessarily because it wasn't already worth the initial price tag, but because it did not feel like it was even a complete game. While I am happy to say that is no longer the case, the small, yet incredibly irritating aspects of the game are still what I think of when looking back at my playthrough thus far.

It's definitely overall a much better game. The clumsy nature of the storytelling is gone, and as far as the narrative experience is concerned, Deaths Gambit is finally where it should be. I still don't really leaving Sorun without a voice was a good call, I understand he was meant to be a self insert of sorts, and was meant to have the player's voice, but given he has dialogue of his own, but the result is just an awkward experience. Other games that do this limit the player character's dialogue to prompts, they never speak unprompted, I think that's why it feels so strange to me.

I've enjoyed all the new areas and bosses that I have seen, it's pretty good to see there are areas put in between things too, central sanctuary linking straight up to Bulwark was very jank, but now you've got a little area in between, plus a cutscene to tell you you're about to walk into a boss fight. It's parts like this where the developers show they really did care about how their game was presented to the player.

Gameplay is overall much better, but I will say I don't think the talents are really all they're cracked up to be. For my playthrough I went with the mage class. (I went acolyte of death when I first played.) The bosses don't have as much jank as before, but I will say needing to kill 5 heroics is a bit questionable when all of the heroics I have fought are either barely any harder than their original encounter, or are just flat out unfair.

The state of the heroics is definitely my biggest gripe at the minute and it is a very big gripe, not necessarily hard, but with the potential to be very annoying and unfair, the best example of this for me at the moment would be the Forgotten Gaian and Phoenix Rider Heroics, both rely on ganking the player to add any challenge, which is just a frustrating pace-breaker where you're not allowed to actually demonstrate your mastery of the enemies attacks because they're just going to throw more ♥♥♥♥ at you.

If the Heroic fights see some adjustment to be less gank-reliant, then I think the game is pretty much free of the old problems that it was plagued with. I keep coming back to update this review the more I think about it.

This is a monumental improvement over the release, I personally think it is a better game than Hollow Knight, and feels more like a genuine metroidvania than a lot of recent games that carry the mantle. I'm sure the devs would just read my updated review and roll their eyes at my complaints, and I probably would too if I were them, but I want to be very clear in that I hold the game in high regard even with these flaws, Afterlife was a fantastic job, and I hope it ends up being worth their investment.

---BELOW IS THE ORIGINAL REVIEW, LEFT FOR CONTEXT.---

Get it on sale.

A fantastic art style and soundtrack unfortunately do not compensate for a disjointed mess of a story, awkward enemy design, attacks that throw you around far more than they have any right to, and minimal feedback on damage done.

All this, and adding on a large number of minor bugs that mess with the games presentation (as soon as the very start of the game where the protagonist is being dragged up to the corpse pile, Vrael just sort of appears at the edge, rather than walking in.) make it very difficult to recommend the game.

Also they put the best boss in the game in the worst area (Ylnoth)

The art is great, the atmosphere is great, the boss fights are great. But at the very core of the game, it feels like they just did not want to make actual levels and locations. Randomly generated hallways for a metroidvania type of game aren't necessarily a bad thing, but when basically all of your enemies devolve to floating through walls and shooting at you, or jumping at you like a 3 legged cat.

Get it on sale, but at full price, you'd be better off getting any other quality metroidvania.

You collect lil' beans and they do their best Crash impression.

Local Koala says it is good for players seeking a stress-free experience that they can jump in and out of with little obligation.

Alternatively, it's just as enjoyable for people looking for a bit more invovlement in their bean exploitation.

Give it a shot.
